Govt allows duty free import of pellets finally

November 12. Shooters got another reason to smile today as the Ministry of Finance (Department of Revenue) exempted the .177 calibre lead pellets used in 10m air rifle event from import duty vide customs notification no. 120/2008 dated 4/11/2008. This has come as a great gift for the Indian shooters after the historic Olympic gold won by Abhinav Bindra and the new air rifle world record set by Gagan Narang recently.

Even though the government had allowed the free duty import of .177 air rifle and air pistols earlier, they had a duty on the import of .177 pellets which is the type of ammunation used in these rifle and pistols.

Speaking to indianshooting.com world record holder Gagan Narang said "It has been an endless wait for the shooting farternity am happy everyone will get good quality pellets to shoot with at amuch lesser cost and the shooting standars in India will reach new heights in the 10 metre air events, it is a great gesture by the government".

Top skeet shooter and Memberof Parliament Naveen Jindal, too had been fighting for the cause and had the rifle import duty exempted last year. The 10 metre air rifle and air pistol events are the most popular events of shooting sports throughout the world and Indian shooters have proved that they are the best in these events in the world. Some of the biggest sports achievements for India have come from the 10m air rifle event which includes an Olympic Gold, current world and junior champion, current men's and women's world record and many world cup medals. indianshooting.com

Why do I have this feeling that it is duty free only for those who were able to import them earlier, albeit after paying duty.

Duty free sure,but not free.

Maybe I am wrong.

How much was the duty earlier :?:
I still think that it makes sense to bring them with you as part of personal baggage, than ordering via mail order, where the cost of freight perhaps is 3 X the cost of the pellets even if the duty has been scrapped.
