Trying out a 30+ years old Diana at a makeshift target

Hey Guys,

I tried my .22 Diana air rifle on a make shift target to check out the performance. Any opinions would be of great help.

the specifics are as below,

i shot 22 pellets at the target from 20 feet. i sketched a target on a paper and stuck it to a cardboard sheet. the total width of the target (the one in the pic) would be 1 mm. I nailed this target on a wooden plank 2 inches thick. almost all the pellets passed clean through the target and made a circular embed mark on the wooden plank.

whatever information you can glean from the above are welcome. what i need to know most is can i use this rifle at shooting ranges? Do they permit .22 air rifles ?

Zenbon,

You cannot use .22" calibre for formal air-rifle target shooting but nothing stops you from plinking with it. If you want to shoot at K.S.R.A., you will need to buy a .177" calibre air-rifle/pistol.

The accuracy is awful but that could be caused by a dirty bore, a burr at the crown, loose stock screws, inappropriate pellets or bad shooting technique.

You don't say how deep the dents in the wooden plank are, so it would be difficult to even guesstimate the power. Making the rifle as powerful as it originally was will involve the import of a main-spring, piston washer and breech seal from http://www.gunspares.co.uk/ and nothing else. If you get the parts, I will install them for you incase you are hesitant to do this yourself.

Bring your Diana to Bangalore and join us at the next tin can bash. Better still bring it to my place so that I can check it before you order the parts.

P.S.: Do not shoot at hard surfaces such as wooden planks with low powered airguns as the pellets tend to bounce right back at the shooter.

The dents were mostly around 1mm deep. I used master shot pellets(both the pointed one and flat headed one) . i guess the wooden plank was of burma teak. i agree with you that the rifling might be marred by burrs.

i checked the site but could not figure out which spring and washers are necessary.

Thanks dude. I brought the diana to bangalore today morn. but, going by what Mack The Knife says, i guess i can just use it for tin can sessions

i checked out some IHP air rifles in coimbatore(though not in a proper armoury). The rifles were not that great.. lot of bad welding that can be spotted even by my inexperienced eye.

Great observation dude! .. yeah, it is a short haired pointer. I thought that particular issue would complement the guns!
i dont have any dogs now. Used to have Doberman and Labrador. What about you?
