Carrying imported 0.22 Cal air rifle pellets from Dubai

Post by karandheer78 » Sun Feb 24, 2008 9:04 pm

Hi guys,

Some of my family members are going to Dubai for a trip. I wanted to know:

1. Any good (good = reasonable, well stocked) place in Dubai which stores international brands of air rifle pellets?
2. Would it entail multiple round of queries, by the customs et all, if the pellet boxes are carried in the checked in luggage? Of course, I am not contemplating asking them to carry 20 tins but maybe 6-7 assorted tins of 500 pellets each. They wud be all 0.22 cal.

The disembarkment on their return wud be at Mumbai international airport, from Dubai.

If there r any special precautions to be taken (eg: informing the flight crew etc) pls let me know. Travel back wud be thru Emirates.

Cheers!

Hello karan,
i do not know about dubai, but i brought in some pellets from singapore through various friends and in one case from uk without any hassles. i expect my friends informed the airlines while checking in, i am not sure about this but they all said that there were no problems.

I have been informed that the official restriction is 2000 pellets per returning passenger, though this is not very strictly enforced. There is no restriction on the calibre of pellets and .22 cal pellets should be just fine!

HTH

Hello Sudhaiob...Hi Abhijeet...hmmm...so it's an opaque area once again. I think I'll follow the following steps:
1. Restrict the tins to 4-5 of 500 pellets each.
2. Declare them to the cabin crew first hand about them & their reservations if any.
3. Pray...& pray hard tht they come in without a mess!!

But thanks for the guidance...it will jelp for sure!

Karan,
you got the terminaology a bit skewed.
declare them to
1. CHECK IN STAFF at baggage check in.Complete paperwork/formalities, if any.
2.SECURITY staff at scanners as :
AIR GUN PELLETS-NOT FIREARM ammunition.

Keep bill ready to show if required.
Dubai airport staff are very cooperative and knowledgeable, so shouldnt be a major bother

ENSURE it goes as checked in luggage
NO need to inform CABIN CREW inside the aircraft as you will not be carrying anything into the cabin.
In this day and age of heightened paranoia, talking of guns and other scary words to the cabin crew may cause alarm amongst some other passenger and or cause an unwanted situation/rescrutiny.
Relax, you should have no problems.

Hi there,
Just to update u further, tell the people who buy u the pellets to request the dealer to give u a bill in arabic for the same. This makes it easier for them at the security. The cops know that airguns/pellets are not restricted items in check-in baggage only and the arabic bill eases them. Most of them do not read english! They may ask to open the baggage to do a physical check, but its a breeze,no trouble at all.Like Asif mentioned above, yes the counter staff are very knowledgeable and helpful.Once u clear security ,u dont need to inform anyone u are carrying pellets in your check-in baggage.
I travelled back from Dubai about 6 months ago and carried 10 boxes of .177 pellets(1000 total).Needless to say it got confiscated at Bombay on arrival. All the best to your folks to get it thru!
take care

IIRC - you'd mentioned that you breezed through green channel on your return, or was that another trip? What was the reason given for confiscating the pellets?

Cheers!

HI Abhijeet,
the breeze was at the security check in Dubai b4 u check-in your baggage. The reason for confiscation in Bombay was numbers!!They said I had more than the legal amount permissable! :( Anyways I only paid 2 dhirams a box, which totalled to 20 for the 10 boxes.I seriously did not want to waste time arguing with the snowflakes on arrival. They did send me a couple of reminders to come and clear the boxes, but I would spend more money travelling to and fro, than what the pellets were worth!

Hi eljefe..hi hunter. Hmm...so it is worthwhile taking this call I guess. Hey, you guys can let me know which place in dubai wud be best to pick these pellets? They r for my RWS 350 Magnum & therefore heavy grained 0.22 cal is the need of the hour.

I have PM'd Shahid too but in case he is not accessing this account I'll be left without the info. Preferrably, if you'll have the address + tel number + website it wud be great!

Cheers!

Hi Abhijeet...checked on the threads. No conclusive address, information etc in it. Have searched on google too, but no definitive phone number. Went on Diana website but I am more or less sure that's an outdated number.

Any other place I can check on?

Hi Mack The Knife...this is exactly the thread I checked. Nothing conclusive in it. Unless I have read things wrong in it.

Believe it or not the gsmith .22 round heads called high impact are about 18 grains. They work very well in my friends hw 77 and do great at 40+yards. So try a few out maybe you'll be happy.
