Hi Grewy,
I guess multiple aspects will be involved however 1 thing can surely observed the block where the hinge is located multiple scratches and decoration of the enamel in circular motion for a used air pistol.
Hope it helps you identify your requirement.

Unless a seller is trying to confuse a buyer , it may not matter .
If someone is selling an item as 'new' and it is not then yes there are some concerns .
However it may be better to ask if the item has been looked after by its previous owner .
Scratches , dents and grinding noise when it is operated will indicate hard use .
Sometimes however buying used/pre-owned is better than new - if the owner has looked after the item and used it with care .
This is because factory made items need to be run-in just like a car engine before best performance is achieved.
Depending on the air pistol system - spring or Co2 etc , certainly spring airguns benefit from much use before they show their real potential .
