Hello friends,

I am a new member to this forum. Although i have been taking help of this group since few months for gaining knowledge related to shooting.
I have started shooting 5-6 months back and also participated in state competition. Did not win anything though apart from some experience for next year state competition. Currently i am practicing with Hammerli AR20 air rifle. I am member of a shooting club and i am using club rifle. I want to buy my own rifle now because i want a rifle specifically assigned to me now which only i use...to become more and more habitual of that gun. I need suggestion regarding the rifle i should purchase. I dont want to upgrade gun every now and then. Please suggest me which gun should i buy which is suitable for state/zonal and even national competitions. I know i have just started and i should wait to see how far i want to go but i already know that i want to go very far with shooting and i am very serious for it. I once tried a better rifle of a guy at shooting range and i felt it was a lot better to shoot and load as compared to AR20 i use.

- Should i buy a 0.177 cal rifle or 0.22 ? which is better for competitions?
- which brand should i go for? - Walther, Feinwerkbau, Anschutz
- which gun should i buy which is suitable for state/zonal/nationals?

Is walther LG400 suitable or i can have a better option in same budget? i am saving money to buy a good rifle which i do not have to change for every level i upgrade to ---I know i am too optimistic but that is okay :) :stupid: ). I am saving around 2 lakhs for rifle, so i will need a rifle within that budget ( but if you have any suggestion which is a little more expensive, please suggest that as well)

Please give your valuable suggestions with some pros and cons of the brands you suggest.

If you have been a member of a shooting club AND practicing there, then don't you think this question is a pointless one :P

i know for 10 meter competitions only 0.177 is allowed. but i have read that for 25 meter, 0.22 is also allowed.

Other questions are also pointless or can be answered?

0.22cal bullets are used, not pellets. The three brands you mentioned are perfectly capable to take you forward. Walther LG400, Anschutz 9015, FWB 800 are fantastic barrelled actions. Each comes with a variety of stock options. From basic to advanced. Some prefer wood stocks, others prefer aluminium stocks. Some prefer stocks with countless adjustability, while others prefer stocks with the most basic of adjustments.

Sohampaul11, I don't know if I'm missing something here but which clubs allow shooting of a .22 LR on the 25 meter range?

Sohampaul11 - sorry my question was badly framed. This gentlemen has said he has read somewhere that .22 AR's can be used for the 25 meter range. Anyway as you correctly pointed out that the .22 in question uses bullets not pellets. However I always thought a .22 pistol is shot on the 25 meter range and rifle can only be shot at the 50 meter range. Since we are talking rifles I was wondering if some clubs now allow .22 rifle also to be shot on the 25 meter range?

I didn't mention any type of. 22 bullets. As far as I know 25m rapid fire pistol is shot using .22lr.

Sohampaul11 please see my edited post. The question was badly framed and not at all clear.
Have edited the post so hopefullu my question is more clear now. It would be good to know from a competitive shooter regarding any change of policy or rules.

Sorry just saw your answer mate- so it is still pistol at the 25 meter range and rifle at 50 meters.

The OP seems to have a misconception that .22 air rifles are used in 25m ranges. To make it clear, all the air events use .177 cal air rifles and air pistols and are shot at 10m ranges. All the 25m ranges are used for pistol shooting, and they are chambered either for .22 or for .32. Standard pistol uses .32 bullets while sport pistol, rapid fire pistol use .22 bullets. 50m range is used for either 50m free pistol or 50m rifle events which include prone, 3p and all of them use .22 bullets.

NONE OF THE ISSF EVENTS USE .22 AIR RIFLES

Added in 2 minutes 24 seconds:
Yes. It has always been that way for quite a long period of time now.

thanks sohampaul for your helpful answers. I was not aware of this. The range i go is a very basic range and not much information is provided there. Mostly i have to be on my own. That is why i am looking for answers on internet. Moreover, i had a short talk with range owner regarding the rifle i can buy and they had a couple of fresh imported rifles with them. I felt they could be biased towards those rifles and hence was checking out here. If a person is asking a question that obviously means he is not aware of things and hence he is enquiring about it. I appreciate that instead of criticising you focused on answering and clearing my doubts. I really appreciate.

I am inclined towards LG400 more after reading on internet. I have not got a chance to use any of those 3 rifles.

Thanks Sohampaul11. Of course, I know that .22 AR's cannot be used on any range. I was only wondering a if .22 LR rifle is now being shot even at the 25 meter range- clearly not. Your answer is very comprehensive though - thanks for that (y)
