Air Rifle scope rail & detachable sights.

Post by main13 » Mon Feb 15, 2016 4:42 pm

Greetings wise gents!

Am looking to find out the following from an airgunner's perspective:
  • 1) 'Ideal' dimensions for a dovetail mount.
    2) Number, dimensions & placement of scope arrestor holes.
    3) Preferred design for detachable iron sights.
Inputs will be greatly appreciated & hopefully incorporated in an Indian AR sooner than later.

Regards,
WB

IMHO
. Ideal dimensions for dovetail mount would be the Standard 11mm dovetail or 20mm Picatinny of atleast 6 inches length on the Cylinder and minimum 2 inch length on the muzzle to ensure compatibility of available accessories.
. Minimum 3 scope stop pin holes spaced 2cm apart.
. Preferred iron sights would be the blade and aperture type. However the apreture type needs to be close to the eye on the cylinder, so difficult to implement in break barrel rifles for which the V notch is ideal since the distance from the eye would be greater.
These are my views based on my experience/requirements.

Thanks a bunch for the inputs. Got a few more questions. Would be great if you could have a look at the same too:
  • * Diameter of stop screw holes & distance of first one from the butt-end.
    * Should the arrestor pin holes be 'centred' on the rail or 'offset' towards muzzle or butt end?
    * Effectiveness of Picatinny Vs Dovetail in minimizing creep & related damage to the rail over time.
    * Accuracy Vs Suitability for machining of v-notch+ghost ring & ladder-type sights.

Stop screw are standard sizes will have to measure one and let you know. Having a picatinny will negate the reqmt of stop hole and there will be no creep.
Stop holes to be centered and offset towards butt end starting approx 2 cm from the butt end of cyl.
V notch easy to machine and is for fast tgt acquiring. Aperture for better accuracy. Ladder/ ramp type works for aperture sight. Ramp type/screw adjust type for v notch.
Ghost ring for deflection coupled with elevation screw type front sight.
