I've ordered an airgun of .22cal and it's 450fps
The seller claims that its range is 40m.I'm doubtful

Its "range" , i.e. the distance the bullet travels, will be far longer than 40 meters. The exact range will vary with barrel elevation and pellet shape.

is 450 fps powerful?

Exactly how does the seller know that it is 450 fps and not 550 or 350? Velocity will vary depending on the mass of the pellet. Other than Precihole, no manufacturer or seller in India talks about this and anyone who gives any figure is actually bluffing openly. If Indian sellers and manufacturers have access to a method of verifying muzzle velocity they are certainly not making it public. You seem to be hung up on this figure which has been put in your head by your seller. YOU have to decide whether:
1. Is it true
2. If true, do you like it

On this forum you are asking us to say if it is true and if we like it.

450 fps is enough to punch through paper targets at the standard 10mts target shooting distance. Play safe and ensure there is an impenetrable backdrop - this is basic safety common sense - I'm assuming that is what your desired effect is ?

The rifle has already been ordered and is going to reach you tmrw. Why hassle yourself with things that cannot be changed now anyways. Look forward to enjoying what you get and upgrade when necessary or possible.

Well said. I would not worry about this 450 fps business. A rifle is like a companion who will give you hours of sporting fun and relaxation.

What is the purpose ??
Based on that you should have researched and then a decision could be reached.
Velocity varies fr 350 to 650 fps , even beyond but it is again based on purpose.

Hi Suyash,

I don't mean to be a dampener, but you could have either asked the forum or researched the 1000's of inputs this forum has to offer before ordering.

Having said that...hey...who knows...perhaps you are going to introduce us to the best AR none of us knew about. I would strongly suggest you go through posts on gun tuning / Breaking in period, pellets (each gun has it's favourite pellet) etc. This will help you understand and bring out the best your gun has to offer.

If this is your first AR, please run though the safety rules in this forum before you load the first pellet.

So..I received my order today... It is really a great AG
It looks great. I'm posting pic.It fires at a great velocity (more than 450fps I think).it's extremely powerful. It is very accurate till 20 Yards(I've not tried more than that).Cocking was hard as hell but I got used to it. I bought it from flipkart for Rs 6100,but its actual price is 5000 (at gun kart. com).So I took a risk but it was worth it . So overall it is a powerful, accurate and very good looking gun.
