Did some experiment on DOMINANT EYE IDENTIFICATION:
INFORMATION:
What’s your Dominant Eye?
People have Right/Left eye being dominant than other. Few people don’t have such but all most everybody does.
Especially sports like Gun Shooting, sling shot and Archery, it becomes most important for one to know his dominant eye.
GENERIC EXPERIMENT:
How to determine that?
Some simply say, Triangular hand viewing method or to point your index finger in your vision path over an object of a far distance with both Eyes open first. Then close your left eye, if the finger is on the same object that you had your finger over, that means you are right Eye dominant. To confirm this, if you open the Right eye and closed the previously opened left eye, the finger will be on the same object that you had your finger over. Vise versa can be done to identify whether you are a left eye dominant person.
FUN:
Its not a big challenge if you are a right handed shooter with right eye dominant or left handed shooter with left eye dominant. Ofcourse, its challenge in getting your target down precisely(Now you can check for the difference between precise and accurate smile emoticon for fun). If you are a cross dominant shooter then there are lots of interesting stuffs to Experiment.
WHY WE NEED DIFFERENT EXPERIMENT AND NOT THE GENERIC(mentioned above):
I feel the above procedure is just a rough/crude way of judging the dominant Eye for 'both hand holding the pistol' position. Because there is a minute shake in body by itself or by wind or by the position(while in single hand shooting we do not always face the object straight-shoulder axis is perpendicular to the object, rather than parallel in the above example).
REFINED EXPERIMENT:
To determine the best way to do that, I have undergone some arrangements and came out with the one that I feel to be the right way. We need a tripod to hold the 'bell pin’ and to adjust the hight to place it in the line of sight without any shake(finger will misguide you). Person can hold the tripod to avoid body shake due to wind. Even after taking such precaution one will find this experiment as a neck breaking one. But as this has to be done one time to determine our dominant eye, we can bare it.
I tied a target(silver can) to a rope that runs 300 inches(7.62m) away from me and parallel to my shoulder when I face with both he hands on my pistol while targeting, and perpendicular when I hold my pistol in single hand.
I tied a rope on both the sides of the target as marker varying at a equi-distance of 20 to 23 inch gradually increased as the experiment goes on and found that I am a (right handed) left eye dominant person.
TASK one:
Close your right eye and assuming that the ‘bell pin’ is the 'front sight’, focus the target. Then open the left eye and close the right eye. Now the ‘bell pin’ will shift towards left. Check if that goes beyond the marker rope on the left. Measure it by series of trial by moving the marker rope away from the target inch by inch.
TASK two:
Close your left eye and assuming that the ‘bell pin’ is the 'front sight’, focus the target. Then open the right eye and close the eftl eye. Now the ‘bell pin’ will shift towards right. Check if that goes beyond the marker rope on the left. Measure it by series of trial by moving the marker rope away from the target inch by inch.
CONCLUTION:
Which ever side is getting shifted more from the centre will be your dominant eye. That is, if the shift is more on left side while closing your right eye, then your left eye is dominant. Else if the shift is more on right side while closing your left eye, then your right eye is dominant.
For me it was 23inches on the left and 21inches on the right and hence I concluded myself to be left eye dominant.
It contains a video and some snap shots illustrating the process:
