Precihole rifle power loss

Post by tarat » Sat May 17, 2014 2:45 pm

I got a .177 Pegasus model last year April in Bangalore. The rifle was used very less until now. All in all, maybe around 200 shots were fired till date. Now, having decided to finally start playing seriously with it, I decided to first assess its performance. I have some GSmith pellets that I measured as being 9.4 grains approximately. I also own a chronograph and so shot 5 shots through it. The result shocked me. A low of 535 fps and high of 563 fps! That works out to 6.5 foot pounds!

Now, I have to admit, that for the shooting that I'll do, power is not at all an issue. But even so, this is SUPPOSED to be a 12 FPE rifle, and so, I can't just swallow this. I also know that I won't get 12 FPE with every type of pellet, but still, this is way too low, given its specs. I am left wondering WHY? Is it because of the lack of use? Temperature fluctuations over a year? I dont know. In any case, I still cannot wrap my head around the magnitude of difference. To double check the velocity readings, I also chronied the rifle using a smartphone chrony app. I got a reading of 510 FPS, which tells me that my readings are correct. The chrony app requires very precise setting up, which I could not, and so there is a bit of difference in the reading.

I am thinking of taking it to Kovi Shop in Dickenson Road. And also get some other pellets as the GSmiths are extremely inaccurate in this rifle, in my hands.

There are some pellets which do not suit with the barrel thus deliver less power. Please try 3-4 different kind of pellets , hope you will not be disappointed.
Look at the behaviour of my SDB 45 in 0.22 as max velocity :
NE 10 grains----------650 FPs
Aimco RH 11.6 grs---635 FPS
MSRH 16 grns---------480 FPS
MSFH 16.5 grns-------435 FPs
Unitedshot 14.8 grns--480 Fps
It proves that my gun likes Aimco 11.6 grains best both interms if power and velocity.Hope the same goes for you.
By the way , which smart phone that you use to crono ?

Hi Basu,

Thanks for the response. I hope you are right, and its just a case of a very unsuitable pellet being used for this rifle. I shall try some other brands and see what happens.

Reg. the smartphone app, its called Chrony Connect Mobile Lite. It's a free app, the Lite version that is. There is also the Pro version with extra features. That is obviously not free. I am attaching a screenshot from my phone screen to show you what it looks like.

Dear tarat,
I have been using cronoconnect for quite sometime.
All above datas are of that only.I was keen to know the model of the smart phone as the software gave reliable data in Samsung tab 2 with headset but equally wrose in my Samsung Galaxy mobile.

Basu

Had received information from cronoconnect that this app gives best results at 10 mtrs.

The phone is Xperia Arc LT15i. The very first Xperia Arc model. I noticed another thing today about this app. It looks like it works better if we have at least 10 meters distance between muzzle and target. When I used it the other day, I used 11 meters distance. Today I tried again with only 20 ft distance, and the numbers are coming out even lower. Like 440 fps. Need to do some research on this app ..

The app gets confused by echoes. So you need an open space. And a distance of 10 meters or more is advisable.

But I suspect my own Orion has never produced 12 fpe. Not that I care..but it should not be advertised as that.

Basuda - you might recall that AIMCO came out well even in terms of accuracy/consistency in a review I did some time ago. I recommend AIMCO round head pellets for price and performance.

In terms of accuracy on Precihole rifles - nothing to beat Precipell

Dear benne,
I remember your extensive research about various Indian pellets in terms of consistency, weight and accuracy.
If you watch carefully that my gun gave 10+fpe only in case of AIMCO and not others.
So PH ARs may be liking some other pellets which tarat yet to find out.
Dear tarat ,to my mind there is no chance of loss of power except due to breech seal and the points I mentioned above because it would be too early for piston seal to be worn out.
Yes ,I come to know that precipell is the best suited Indian pellet when it comes to accuracy.
