Other day I was held up in jam and there was a cop with service pistol in his holster. I tried to identify the pistol but could get any clear glance.
I am now curious to know what pistol usually our Indian cops use, caliber etc.
Can anyone one please throw a light on it with some pictures?

Yep, farook is correct. Most of them are armed with the IOF made copy of the Browning Canadian Inglis 9mm pistol.

During my CRTC course at CAR ( City Armed Reserved ) we were shown just about every weapon the police has in the Armory. i had a chance to dry fire the Indian 9mm. In simple words crude chunky piece of metal. Nothing like the original Belgium one...

It is poorly made and crude Farook, but some individual pieces can be quite accurate - after some TLC by the unit armourer. Seen some pretty impressive shooting at 25m with standard IOF ball ammo! Then again, it was an exceptional shooter and a 'worked over' piece
Cheers!

I think the biggest problem with our cops is their attitude not what they are armed with, but that is a different rant altogether...

and to think that a police officers life would be dependent on this.
To qualify for a gun license we had to shoot a check republic brand of .22 rifles. When I shot them just fell in love with the marvel. A smooth shooter and very well balanced.

@everyone, the
iof hi power looks crude from the outside , that is mainly because there is no utility for pretty outer finishing because it is a military sidearm, not intended for sale to civilians.
the internal machining and mechanisms are very well done, i urge you to fully strip one if you get an opportunity, i will also shortly post pictures of stripping our hi power.
you will see that internally, the pistol is not crude at all, it is exactly the way it is supposed to be . we have 2 hi powers, one is my uncle's service pistol an another is held on his 1 PB military allowance. both of them are very good. . its accuracy is the same as a browning made pistol because it uses casting dies from the inglis factory in canada

Well they use a few ones. In CAR training we saw all the firearms used by the police. They use ruger security six, IOF made Browning hipower, recently glock 17 is being imported for police. Long before they used webley and scott revolver. On the rifle side they Ishapore 2A and 2A1, IOF make INSAS, Different AK series rifles, 12 Gauge Pump Action Shotgun to fire rubber bullets and markers, And IOF made tear gar launcher... As far i know mate...

IOF Browning Hipower is built very bad. They are built on the same machines that were used in WW2 times in Canada. There were a few imported into USA and few of them have reviewed them as very bad and poorly built ones... There are good reviews for the Ishapore 2A and 2A1 rifle by some USA gun guys...

I'm not aware of iof pistol but I do know 2A1 dose carry a good report here. More so for the steel used in manufacturing and the fact that it was made for 7.62 NATO cartridge. The British makes were chambered for 303 cartridge.

I own a 2A. There is nothing wrong with the metal on these guns, and they are nicely made. I wanted two things: I wanted an SMLE (not a No. 4 Mk1) and I wanted an Indian weapon. I confess, I like military surplus, but I do not like junk. The 2A is quite nice, although I'm not sure about the quality of wood. The big differences between the 2A and the SMLE is that the sight ears are straight on the 2A, the butt plate is aluminum, rather than brass, and of course, the magazine is different.
When I show it to friends, they are a bit leery of guns, but the Ashoka works like magic on them when I point it out. Whatever might be said about anything else IOF makes, I can say from personal experience that nothing is wrong with the 2As and 2A1s. I thing most members would be proud to own one, as I am.
PS, sinfulsaint, I bought mine from Mickey out in Caddo Mills. I suggest you take a drive out there someday.
