My ORION’s Black SYNTHETIC STOCK with a WOOD FINISH!!!
While a Synthetic Stock functions well enough from a shooter’s point of view it also serves well for the manufacturer considering the economy in its production!
However - “Its feel and heft are a far cry when compared with the good old Wooden Stock”!
It’s been close to 12 months since I acquired my ORION AR in 0.22cal made by PRECIHOLE Sports.
Since acquiring it I have added on the following …
1.2-7 x 32 AR rated Center-Point scope that has AO adjustment & Mil-dot reticules, using a UTG single piece mount – the scope also has illuminated reticules for low light shooting.
2.A Muzzle-Brake
3.Had the hollow spaces within the fore-end of the stock filled with the kind of foam rubber that’s used to dampen sound in audio speaker system
I’ve put through over 2500+ pellets so far. It shoots consistently accurate with less than ¼” groups at 30ft. I couldn’t expect or ask anything more out of it as it’s a good pre-tuned AR in every sense of the word.
All said and done a lingering thought kept knocking at the back of my mind & I kept asking myself…… “What if the synthetic stock be replaced with a WOODEN one”?
To my utter dismay I found the cost to be prohibitive and moreover the inletting within the fore-end were too intricate to be risked with a carpenter as the Orion comes with a hinged cocking arm that requires critical slotting, unlike the IHP & most other brands that have a straight single piece cocking arm & less complicated.
The only recourse then was to give the existing black synthetic stock a “Wood Finish”, the likes of which is done by many AR aficionados abroad. A search on the web-site produced several DIY options but I wasn’t too confident about attempting it, lest I ruined the stock!
Fortunately, I managed to contact an old acquaintance of mine who happened to be a “Surface Coating” specialist for guidance. After some sweet talking & two hours of ‘POW-VOW’ at the Golf Club over grilled chicken sandwiches and several mugs of the Frothy Brew, he agreed to help me out!
My only request was that, he should give the stock a Walnut or Mahogany finish.
He took the stock with him… the week that followed was ridden with nerve racking anxiety & suspense, which mercifully ended when I got a call from him to come & collect it…
Voila! My ORION’s Synthetic Stock now donned a rich MAHOGANY WOOD FINISH!!!
Cheers
