so...how do you cock your spring break barrel...

Post by mercury » Mon Nov 05, 2012 7:58 pm

wierd question.....but seriously, i wonder if there is any reason to the different ways an air gun can be cocked .

check these three different ways....

this is from airgun academy...slap barrel and pull down at the same time.....

this is from archer guns.......dont watch the entire video, just from..2:06.....pull it straight down

this is from crossman....slap barrel down and then pull it all the way down..

this is from umarex , same as archer guns.....http://www.umarexusa.com/pages/howtococ ... arrel.aspx

so.....any right way...wrong way....any way ??????

Wonder how I missed this post till date
Very nice & informative videos- many a new-bee or for that matter many amongst AR shooters could learn from.
The importance of the 'Artillery Hold' too is well demonstrated.
Thanks Mercury for sharing :D

In general I try to do the pull down in one stroke method. I've done the smack with the palm if the locking ball is tight but IMHO the more rhythmic a motion is the more consistent it is.

Personally I believe 'to each his own' the way one does it :D
I first slap the barrel down with a sharp stroke with my palm - once the barrel is released from the breech lock - then hold the muzzle brake firmly and pull it all the way down till I hear the 'resounding click' - suits me fine :D
I feel that this way - the pressure used to bring the barrel down to cock the AR is in a single continuous, smooth & uniform motion.
On reconsidering the procedure I feel that people with longer arms & length of pull will feel it convenient to follow ....
"Slap barrel down and then pull it all the way down"!

Happy Shooting :D

stupid question maybe........but I guess that is the way to learn !

would the design of the barrel detent.......ball bearing or the chisel shaped rod .....have a bearing in the way one should cock the gun ??

But when is the correct stage where you load the pellet? after you open the barrel lock, or after you cock it? a lot of old indian made air rifles can be tricky/unpredictable after being cocked. isn't it safer to load the pellet after you break open the barrel lock and then cock it?

No one can dispute what you have said, although I do not follow this myself. The safest bet would be to load before cocking.

Keep holding the barrel firmly till you have finished inserting the pellet and then lock the barrel in place.
This way you will be ready for any failures of the locking mechanism.

:agree:
slap barrel down releasing it from breech lock is best option. I learned it hard way as once breach lock was little hard and in hurry I tried to break barrel in one motion and since strength need to breech lock and break barrel is different my grip loosen on barrel and it hit me on my fingers.
