Precihole Sports 0.22 Orion - operational queries
Hi,
I recently bought the Precohole Sports Orion 0.22 AR from Aimco. This will be our first AR (my wife plans to target shoot with this eventually). The gun got delivered yesterday. Excellent service from Aimco. I will post a new thread with the unboxing and other details.
However I have a few questions about the gun operation :
1. Automatic Safety located in front of trigger -
How is this to be engaged / disengaged. There is no manual which comes with the gun, which might have been helpful for a newbie like me.
2. The cocking of the gun via breaking the barrel, seems real hard (or am I a softy ). Does this get softer over time ?
3. Maintenance of the gun - any weekly / monthly / annual procedure to be followed or any cleaning to be done after n no. of shots ?
Would appreciate your answers.

Re: Precihole Sports 0.22 Orion - operational queries
1. Safety Catch - it is automatically engaged while cocking. You can hear the slight "click" of the safety falling into place. Just before shooting, push it forward (away from the trigger) with your thumb to disengage. You can also manually engage the safety by pulling it backwards (towards the trigger).
Also please check out the rules of safety catches in general on this (IFG) site, Precihole site, as well as airgunning sites like Pyramidair, etc. All of them advocate practice of shooting safety rules over the use of manual safety.
There is some kind of manual on the Precihole website. I didn't check it fully, but if you don't find the answer, I think an email might work. You can also put in your request for an user manual.
2. I personally find the cocking extremely smooth compared to the old SDB I had. Try a coupla hundred shots, if it still does not smoothen out, contact the company directly.
3. Re. cleaning / maintenance, you'll find a million tips in this site as well as pyramidair type of sites. No flattery intended, but all I learnt about airgunning is due to / through IFG and its members!
4. Adding a point here about your wife's target shooting, 0.22 is NOT ALLOWED by any shooting club / competition / etc. in India for competitive target shooting. In fact, it seems many clubs do not allow 0.22s on their premises!!! 0.177 is what she should go for.

Thanks for the explaining. Safety is prime and will ensure that we go though the saftey procedures before shooting the gun any more.essdee1972 wrote:1. Could not find the user manual on the Precihole website, will request them for same.
Thanks for the tip. We plan to shoot at Karni Singh, where as far as I know 0.22 ARs are allowed (please correct me if I am wrong). We plan to shoot more at home using a pellet trap (also bought from Aimco). I plan to add some weighted targets eventually to make the shooting interesting.4. Dunno about Karni Singh, I stay in Mumbai. Plus I never ventured inside an official range ever. All my shooting is done indoors / on the terrace.
Cheers!

Cool. What kind of targets / pellet traps do you use ? Are you also shooting 0.22 ARs ?

Re: Precihole Sports 0.22 Orion - operational queries
I use very very basic DIY trap. A cardboard box (currently using a box in which I got a toaster ), stuffed with newspapers / magazines, duct-taped shut. A 1/2 inch plywood sheet is tied (yes, tied, with rope) behind the box. The whole thing is hung on the grilles of the window. A target is taped to the front of the contraption as needed.
I do have an advantage of the window looking out on about 200 metres of wasteland. But till date no pellet (not from my old SDB 0.22, not from the new Orion; pointy, roundhead, flathead) has even reached the plywood. I do have to replace the newspapers / box from time to time, hence I have to store all the boxes whenever I buy any appliance / electronics (to the eternal consternation of my better half!!! )
The "personal indoor range", as I call it is about 5.5 metres. For the terrace (12 metres) I use an old cement flower pot, about 2' x 1.5', which I found lying on the terrace. I tied twisty wire (the green thingies) in a cross pattern, and use cloth clips to hold the target to the wire. The remaining soil on the bottom cushions against rebounds. In Mumbai, I don't get to do much terrace shooting, as it is either raining, or too hot!!!
By the way, what is the "magnetic" concept in the pellet trap you have shown? Is it to raise / lower the duckies?

essdee: Is he safety supposed to be automatic ?
I had the opportunity of trying out three Precihole Clubs. In every case the safety was manual. You disengage it by pushing the shoe away from you and engage it by pulling it towards you.

Good Ideas . Simple & effective. Will try them out soon. Living in a crowded city like Delhi, Terrace shooting seems to be the best option. However I am going to ensure that there is an absorbent stuff like a big box stuffed with newspapers or a large flower pot to absorb the strays as well. can afford any stray shots or ricocheting in the neighborhood. Too risky.essdee1972 wrote:I use very very basic DIY trap. A cardboard box (currently using a box in which I got a toaster ), stuffed with newspapers / magazines, duct-taped shut. You are correct. Found this post on another forum where this guy has modified such a pellet trap. In doing so he gives a good peek into the behind the scene mechanism and how the magnetic thing works.By the way, what is the "magnetic" concept in the pellet trap you have shown? Is it to raise / lower the duckies?

I believe you cannot use a 0.22 AR in Karni Singh Shooting range.

Re: Precihole Sports 0.22 Orion - operational queries
The safety gets automatically engaged. It needs to be pushed forward to disengage first. It's so designed to differentiate it from the trigger which is squeezed back and hence avoid additional risk.
Printed manuals became available around end of 9-ratri. I got mine and was among the first to get it. Ideally, I would reco you to send in an attested copy of transaction of sales to the company along with the serial # (if the slip does not mention it) and request the manual WITH the warranty card at the back stamped.
IMHO, .22s that are used inside the ranges in India are firearms (e.g. bruno) - ARs are strictly restricted to .177 cal. Think Lakshya's website has safety rules posted. It would be a good idea to take a prinout and learn by heart and inculcate the good habits in day to day affairs. Good Luck & happy & safe shooting.

Re: Precihole Sports 0.22 Orion - operational queries
Hi Gurus,
Just bought a Orion today from Asian armory, Bangalore. I beleive that the safety lever should engage automatically. I tried a couple of shots at the armory and it worked well. Shot about 10 shots and the safety lever wont engage automatically now.
Has anyone come accross this issue?

The safety lever of my Orion (or the Pegasus vesrions in KSRA) do not engage automatically. They have to be engaed manually by pulling it back like the trigger. It is released by pushing it forward.
