Air Rifle

I have a friend living in India for whom I wish to purchase a quality air rifle. I live in the USA. We have been friends for forty five years. What kinds of customs restrictions will my friend incur in India? He lives in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Can the rifle be shipped to his home or must he collect it in New Delhi?

Thank you for your reply. After reading the threads I am still confused. It seems a 1.77 air rifle can be legally imported but without pellets. How can I import pellets for use with the air gun? Customs seems to be a difficulty for importation? Is it possible to purchase a quality, German, air rifle in India? How about traveling to India with an air rifle and leaving it behind as a gift?
