The new technology will reduce the cost of shooting by two thirds in the sport and the improved safety of the event could mean new venues are used.

"We will have laser shooting for the 2012 Olympics. Based on this new technology, all countries in the world can compete in our sport," Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) President Klaus Schormann said.

"We can hold competitions in parks and even shopping malls. Safety issues will no longer be a big concern."

The new laser system has received royal approval with Prince Albert of Monaco, also honorary president of UIPM, pointing out the practical benefits of the change.

"I think the laser shooting is a great improvement to the sport." he said

"They (the laser guns) will also be easier to carry around, and to take on aeroplanes. It's the way of the future.

Laser beams are not affected by gravity and do not drop over distance. They are also not affected by wind or air resistance. While this might work for a controlled short range indoor shooting event, it bears no resemblance to real shooting over any distance. Pretty worthless even for practice ( it might help you improve your trigger work, though).

Why dont they organizing competition on video games??? The cost will be even less and can be organised online too....


Think about the cost reduction due to zero transportation and zero accomodation..

Why laser guns then? Laser pointers are available for 50-100 INR on most city streets. Takes 3-4 button cells, lasts a huge amount of time. And pointing one at a cop in some countries can even get you shot!!! +1 with GBM & Mundaire. Another move to slowly squeeze out real shooting, even airguns.
