Re: red dot scope
Technically a Red Dot is not a scope, but an optical sight allowing for quick target acquisition.
You do get scopes with a dot reticle, but those are generally BR or in some cases for hunting. Though in the case of BR they generally are not true dot reticles but more along the lines of CH1 or the NP2DD from Nightforce.
With the Red Dot sights you get quick acquisition of the target, but unless you get tons of practise they are notorious for leading you astray. You will hit your target but that is about it, dont expect precision, since the dot may not always be perfectly centered in your sight picture. For a quick acquisition and being able to generally hit your target they are good.
Whether or not you can use a crossbow red dot sight on an airgun I have no idea. Since I do not know the mounting system of your cross bow or anything about airguns other than they use air for propellant.

Re: red dot scope
In my opinion a mildot scope is a good way to learn shooting through a scope. But it should be an airgun rated.
