HW 80 / 85

Post by shahid » Tue Feb 13, 2007 5:38 pm

Dear Mack The Knife

Since after all trials the Diana 35 is still shooting low a barrel droop is possible.

The local dealer has agreed to exchange it for an HW 80 / 85 or Diana 52 or 54. What is your suggestion on this ? Which one to go for ?

Hi Shahid,

I for one am not surprised to hear that. However, I am happy to hear you are not loosing out and that the gunshop is doing the decent thing by offering you a choice of replacements.

The HW85 has a smaller cylinder and is less powerful. However, it is a sweet shooter and lighter than the HW80. There are/used to be three grades of HW85s if I remember correctly.

I would NOT buy the HW80 or HW85 in standard barrel length. You may have a recurring problem. What you should get is the carbine version of either of the two models, that is, HW80K or HW85K. My preference is for the HW80K.

However, I would urge you to buy the HW77K or HW97K (carbine versions) instead of a HW80K or HW85K. The Dianas shouldn't even be considered when there is access to a Weihrauch.

Whichever Weihrauch you buy, you will make it a far better rifle by adding a V-Mach tuning kit to it.

Got a HW 80 K with V Mach sports tuning kit. Did not take its scope for I will use the Nikko Stirling.

Difference in price - Dhs. 300, this HK 80 I finally bargained for Dhs. 1000 i.e. exactly Rs. 12,500.

I have never used any make other than Diana or BSA before. I am sure this WEIHRAUCH will be an excellent Air Rifle. I'll take it to the club's range tommorrow after India beats Sri Lanka in the cricket match.

That was fast!

Are V-Mach kits available readily in Dubai?

If you have a FAC rated DIY kit (over 12 ft.lbs. or in this case, a 20 ft.lb.) then the Nikko may not survive past past 5000 shots. What scope were they giving with it?

Better late than never. ;)

Before you shoot it, clean out the bore as manufacturers put a rust preventive in there. Then shoot about 50 shots through it before going for groups. I would also recommend degreasing all the stock screws and then use Loctite 243 Removeable Threadlock to keep them from shifting. Let it rest for at least an hour or preferably an entire day before shooting. Do not overtighten the stock screws as the star washers beneath eat into the wood.

Pellets of choice:
1) H&N Field & Target Trophy. (aka Webley Venom Lazapell, if still available)
2) Air Arms Hunters or the JSB equivalent, assuming these are still made or available.
3) Believe it or not but the humble Eley 5.6mm (Blue Top)

Expect 1/4" edge-to-edge 5-shot groups at 25 yards. ;)

Have fun and welcome to the Weihrauch family.

On offer was the AGS 3-9x40 scope. Similar to Nikko Sterling AO gold Crown I have. This HW 80 comes with silver REKORD trigger, 2 stage super fine adjustable. Hawke rings. There is a dealer in England who super tunes it and provides a test certificate. But it is fine, don't need all that.

Initial tests at home at 10 yards showed it grouping at less than 1/8 inch. Very very accurate indeed. The finish and qua;ity of seals etc. is definetely superior to Diana. It handles very well. I am pleased to migrate to Weihrauch.

Webley Venom lazapell, lazadome all are available here and the full range from H & N and Gamo as well. Also walther and Umarex, Diana, RWS and Eley pellets.

I am doing trials with webley venom, Gamo hunter 14.54 grains and Gamo Pro Magnum, 16 grains.

Thank you for your help Mack The Knife. Iam very glad with the end result.

do reassure me guys, you lot don't actually own shares in weirauch  do you? i mean....no bsa or webleys or crossman fan clubs here?

while i must confess all these threads have weaned me off my fixation for dianas, you'll have to try harder to prise me off my Air arms pro sport. and since it's actually stored in my bedroom .... technically, i sleep with it! :) best lookin' air rifle me eyee ever spotted! yessirreee.

but, that is another story, and another thread, maybe

Anand,

The only reason we go on about Weihrauchs is because AA guns are not available in Dubai, which is where most of the guns come to India from.

Out of the box the AA guns are better, though there have been complaints about the quality of their bluing in recent years.

I have owned three AA springers, including a new walnut stocked Pro Sport Mk2. I finally sold them in England itself as I could not get someone to bring them over. This is well before the relaxation of import rules in 2005.

Whilst being the most beautiful production 'springer' it does have the draw back of being more expensive to FAC as it isn't just a case of dropping in a Venom DIY FAC kit unlike the other AA or HW springers.

Incidentally, a Weihrauch installed with a Venom DIY kit is reckoned to be marginally better than standard AA springers by those who have owned both.

You have every right to be in love with your PS. ;)

Sounds like The Airgun Centre.

All '80s come with a silverish looking trigger blade. Here's a bit of advice - don't faff around with the trigger adjustments if you are happy with it. There are two screws - one that is seen and another that is hidden by the stock.

When switching to different pellets, always clean the bore then shoot at least 10 pellets, if not more, before trying for groups. Only clean the bore when the groups start opening up.

Anand,

The sensible thing to do would be to get a secondhand Weihrauch in good condition which does not exceed 150 quid and install a DIY kit or go for the full monty Venom Lazaglide (or whatever it is called these days) tune.

If you still want to spend more, there are Venom custom stocks, moderators, re-bluing, engraving, etc.

Mack The Knife

P.S.: Please don't tell the Home Minister where these suggestions came from...

Yes AIrgun Centre and a few more. I have been given an AIrgun Centre Gold Card as well which entitles me to warranty, free service while in England and free labour on all accesory installation. Also discount on all products purchased from Airgun Centre.
