My New .177 IHP Mod 35 from AIMCO

Post by kb100 » Tue Aug 17, 2010 1:38 pm

Friends

I decided to buy the .177 IHP model 35 and practice with it for some time before understanding my skills and inclinations (rifle/pistol etc). I enquired in Kovi shop and they quoted 5900/- for it!

Further to all the posts I read here as well as the advice given by Tenx, I placed the order with AIMCO. I spoke to Joy Biswas and sent him a mail around 1.30pm pm on Friday the 13th (what an apt day/date to buy a weapon  ). Within ten mins he had mailed me the quote for the gun along the extras I had asked for - 5 packets of the new Mastershot Wadcutters, gun oil, carry case and shipping! I transferred the money online by 2.00pm and found that the package was already packed and readied for dispatch by then (I wanted to order some extra pellets in the same shipment - which subsequently came in by Speed PoSt). It got despatched the same day and I got a mail from AIMCO giving me the despatch details. (GATI)

I kept tracking progress on the GATI website and the package got delivered to me a hour back - in four days flat from the time I placed the order, the extra pellets I had asked for landed an hour earlier. :)

It would be an understatement to say the packing was excellent! It came securely packed in a strong wooden crate, which itself was covered in a plastic sack. Absolutely no way the gun could have been damaged in transit! I have uploaded some snaps .. http://picasaweb.google.co.in/112616907 ... directlink .

For anyone who wants to order IH, I recommend AIMCO wholeheartedly!

The IHP came with a ONE YEAR warranty .. The warranty card was a part of the package. EDIT : The package also contained a complimentary 100's packet of Master Shot 'Long Range' pellets

Will put up the pics of the gun a little later.

The same as the prices mentioned on their website...

.177 IHP Mod 35 - 3,600/-
Gun Cover - 130/-
5 packs MS Pellets- 936/-
Gun Oil - 64/-
Freight - 600/-
----------------------------------
TOTAL - 5,330/-
----------------------------------

I ordered an additional 5 packs (I had ordered for P10s but they were not in stock... heard good things about the Master Shot Wadcutters, hence decided to go with them.) This cost an additional 167/- for Speed post parcel.. regular regd post will cost you 100/- only

Hey Congrats.

Where do you live? It's quite amazing that you received your package in 4 days as you mention. I myself placed an order for IHP MOD 35 5.5 from AIMCO on the 11th (dispatched on the 11th) thru GATI. My 'assured' date of delivery was yesterday but I haven't received it yet. Had it been anything else I wouldn't have bothered about the delay ... but I am hungry for my rifle and these guys are flipping on their 'assured' date of deliver. Needless to say, I have spent some sleepless nights dreaming all about my rifle.

AIMCO, on the other had were so good. So prompt and through professionals so far. Only if, 75% percent of our nation functioned like they do, We would have ruled planet Earth and Venus and Mars too!!

Hey kb100

Those numbers only aggravate one's feeling of helplessness rather than helping you. They don't have the right answers ... they only parrot what you already know. Anyways, I got a call from them late evening yesterday saying that I ''might'' receive my package today.
Bangalore's further south to Bombay. If they are taking 4 days for Bangalore, they should take half that time for Bombay.
But that's only common sense. Reality is different, I reckon.

Cheers.
I "might" shoot to glory shortly.

Okay...

Decided to give the gun a "once-over"with an objective to improve efficiency and not FPS.

How to open the IHP up has been well catalogued - hence am not going to repeat it. Apon opening we found the spring and the piston and the innards had rust on it. The gun was also extremely greasy in places! Both the piston and the chamber was horribly scored - so much so that the OE synthetic washer had already started fraying at the edges (must have seen a max of 50 shots till then).

After much debate, I decided not to spend too much money without guarantee of tangible results. Hence we decided to change only ONE thing - the SEAL.

The chamber was horribly scored. Apparently that is how the new guns look! We had the chamber and the piston polished on a lathe - NOT mirror finish - you need the micro grooves for retaining the lubricant. Next I got myself an Jim Macari Apex Seal. The adapter was made locally. The spring was given a thorough cleaning. The OE Spring guide was totally LOOSE. hence had a new mild steel one fabricated. Wanted to use a top hat but I did not want to cut the spring - hence left that.

Now the assembly...

We first smeared a little Jim MAcari's Moly on the outside side surface of the Seal and the top and bottom of the piston where it comes in contact with the chamber. We then introduced the piston carefully into the chamber and tested it. HOW? We closed the discharge port with a finger and tried to pull the piston back.. if you find the piston refusing to move beyond a point, and moving back when let go - that means vacuum is being generated- the tolerances are good and the seal is doing its job!

We then smeared a little Moly on the spring guide (very little mind you - not the 'greasing' we are used to :) ). and placed the spring on it. we then dabbed the outside of the spring with Jim Maccari's Heavy Tar - again very very lightly - just enough to coat the surface. Some more Moly was dabbed on the lever cocking joint, the trigger joint and the actual lever and the barrel joint. We then put the whole thing back together. We also put in a synthetic washer in place of the leather breech seal. (I am not too happy with the fit and finish of that but its doing its job - absolutely zero air leakage.)

Despite being as careful as we could, the first test shot dieseled and how! We literally had sparks flying out of the muzzle! But it settled down immediately thereafter.

Took it to the range - shot off a round - and everyone jumped! The Solid THWAK the pellet made as it struck the deflector meant the power was in a different league. We zeroed the gun and fired off a few shots (pellets were the MasterShot Flatheads). I have never seen a target with better 'cuts' - nice clean round holes... no tearing, snagging etc.

Met up with TenX's. We shot off a round or two into a tree at about 8-10 mtrs and the pellet clean buried itself over a cm deep! When fired into the ground the pellet totally and completely disintegrated. He commented that in addition to the power being great, he found both the trigger and recoil excellent too! Cant ask for anything more at this price! Am more than happy so far!

Wanted to take some pictures but the whole things happened in a haphazard way spread over three weeks - hence could not catalogue it pictorially. Will be taking the gun to the range next Sunday for some hand held and bench rested shots - to check grouping. Will try and post some pictures. Need to try and see if I can get access to a chrony as well!

The only issue left with the gun is it takes quite some effort to load a pellet into the barrel. Fingernail only! So after about a couple of dozen shots your fingertips hurt as hell! Wondering if I should have the barrel end bevelled a little - or leave it well alone!

I have to thank TenX and PKJeetesh for their inputs. Could not have done without them! Thank you guys.. I owe you one!

Next project is the complete refurbishing of a Circa 1984 IHP .22 (the one with the peep sight). This one will get the complete Jim Maccari treatment - springs and all! Am looking forward to it!

I checked with them last week and they seem to have come down on the prices now. Around 4800/- i think is what they are quoting now.

Last Sunday was the first day out with the IHP ever (on the range that is).

This is how it looked! .. both cards had 7/10 within the NINE Ring (Standing 10 mts). Only 3 flyers out of the Nine ring. Got a whole lot of nice groups as well - but those were three shot groups while the sights were being zeroed. So for all those who had accuracy questions about the IHP...
