Media on Ban of Airguns

Post by architectharsha » Thu Aug 05, 2010 10:39 am

Deccan chronicle today released a article about risks of airguns and asking to ban them. this is a notable article shortly after cabinet amended the firearms act. I think media should rethink before publishing certain articles.

P.S : may be the babus are giving us a "Air Arms Act" of 2010

yes use of air-pistol by people below 18 should be illegal. Unless under supervision of a trained person, or in a range. ( by the way India is waiting for producing its own Schumacher, by teaching 18 yr olds to drive!!!)

DH is not Idiot-proof!, the guy is speaking volumes about "Airsoft gun"and eh.. iron pellets ~ bbs? then they have to stop using ball-bearings in cycles, the most common source of these guys!
DH wrote: Not that innocent!

now we have something here.. someone who tried to kill by shooting with an air-pistol, may be he had pea-sized brains. Or we have the regular lathi bearer who can blow a pin-hole to a nuke site.

It's about BLAMING airguns for a FAILURE of PROPER PARENTING! Unfortunately we live in an era where people are UNWILLING to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for their own actions.

A GOOD PARENT would NOT FAIL to DRILL THE RULES OF FIREARM SAFETY and responsible handling into his/ her child. Blaming airguns for this FAILURE OF PARENTS is wrong at several different levels and indicates a rather unfortunate attitude. Today they are blaming airguns, because they themselves have failed to teach their kids proper gun safety - TOMORROW BLAME CARS because they did not teach their children responsible driving habits? What next? Blame teachers/ school/ syllabus for poor academic performance? Blame bicycles because some kid got hurt trying a foolish stunt? You get the drift...

Hi there!,
> Banning Air Guns - This is the case of an ignoramous 'shooting off' his / her mouth.
> Next it'll be the innocuous 'pencil' - there have been cases where a child poked his classmate in the eye & causing irreprable damage & loss of sight.
> What Next - I shudder to think!
> I remember many years ago our erstwhile PM Morarji Deasi wanted to ban 'alcohol' to our defense forces!!! This was followed by a whole lot of funny cartoons in the media where they showed our jawans eating 'dry fruits' & peanuts!!!
> I won't be surprised if 'kitchen knives & catapults' are in the running.

Hello,

Banning of airguns is a stupid notion, probasbly propagated by those who don't even understand as to what it is.

The innocous pencil or pen can also become a deadly weapon of injury when used with a strong rubber band or else as they show in the movies...stabbing with these.

Come to think of it, anything and everything can be used to cause injury, so why the airgun.

Then ban kitchen knives [ i saw a article that a woman killed her husband with that!]
Then ban pencils and pens...i myself hit hit my friend when i'm 11
Then stop the power supply..many people sustained injuries and few died!
Then ban vehicles...many pedestrians died!
Then ban shaving tools, scissors and razors...A hero in a tollywood movie killed a villan with that!!
Then ban DIWALI FESTIVAL...they use crackers that may cause severe injury and permit ONLY DEFENSE PERSONEL OR THE ARMED FORCES OR PEOPLE WITH THE ARMS LISCENSE TO BLAST CRACKERS! [i guess it is better if they limit them for use only at at pokhran or beneath sea and avoid using them in living areas!]

I DONT KNOW WHY MEDIA DOES NOT CONCENTRATE ON THE ADS LIKE AXE,WILDSTONE ETC! CHILDREN ARE GETTING MORE SPOILED DUE TO THOSE ADS!

MEDIA IN INDIA IS ALWAYS NEGATIVE...MAKES AN ISSUE ABOUT ALL THE UNNECESSARY THINGS AND KEEPS AWAY THE IMP THINGS! :(

Doesnt media know that any object can be used as a deadly weapon not only air guns :!: :?:

please post your comments on the issue in the deccan chronicle site..here is the link below. they should hear our voice....

Submitted my comment:

What a waste of precious paper. If author is so much concerned about children, he should first write something to ban pen, pencils, sharpeners, compass etc because more children get hurt with those things rather than air guns.

I don’t understand why blame air guns for bad parenting? What if some kid pick up a kitchen knife from his home and stab some other kid, are we going to ban kitchen knives then?

I think author and paper should be more concerned with how parents are raising their kids rather than some tools. Air gun shooting is an Olympic event, INDIA got GOLD medal in this event recently. How are you planning to compete and train future shooters if air guns are banned?

I think media needs to be a bit responsible and need to understand that stories like these effect society. I hope author will realize his mistake and publish an apology to all air gun shooters because this article is nothing short of sacrilege for air gun shooters.

gave a comment on that, but i dont think DC has any plans of showing it.... may be a sad state of affair by any news paper. Right to express seems to have gone to Dogs!!!
Its time that we have a paid ad in a news paper explaining the same, I am sure IFG and RKBA can come together for this venture. We can all dutch in for what can be an educational article on gun ownership in the current mass media of India including print media. a half page article in national dailies.
I am sure we will have people taking a second thought on things, rather than having them read through thought free...

Reason for saying this:
I mentioned this link to my colleagues at office, mostly IT or ITES professional, who literally supported the artice. I spoke to them about the side aspects of the article, how the author seems to have twisted the facts,
1) he calls a toy of 100 - 250 INR an Airgun.
2) how he has failed to identify the real issue. (IMHO gun with an under 12 year old and lack of training)
3) how watching movies havent made themselves (my colleagues) any violent.
4) many students lost eye sight imitating the war scene in Mahabharat and Ramayana, immediately following the episodes in sundays!
5) connecting irrelelvant and vague information to weave together a thread and call it a high- risk!

At this point most agreed and mentioned that the points were not thougt by them, and that the report did not look like one which provoked thought but one which created a bias!

Do i need to say more... we need to make the people think. I honestly feel that i do my share in this, atleast with my acquaintances, i have had 4 people apply for Rifle Association membership with me. I did not coax them, just a few links here and there, they could easily associate this as a sport that needed good training, passion and effort, not to forget the concentration this needs.

well i have just submitted my comment on this, pls dont try to kill me for such a long comment, i was just feeling pissed........

"Dear Author - I hope you have done your homework well before writing this article, a kid can use a pencil to gouge in the eye of another kid, or he may injure some one with a stone just lying on a road side to be picked up and turned into a flying projectile, a kid can get injured while playing see - saw in the park, falling while learning how to ride a bycycle, and on and on and on.... ok so einstein if we go by your notion of things then we should ban the use of pencils, make it illegal to have stones lying around, destroy all rides in parks, and make kids bycycle manuacturers a proclaim offender..... hmmm..i am feeling safe already.

Why to have such a grudge against a tool(airgun)which is designed to enjoy the precision in the sports of shooting. Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang, Major Rajyavardhan Rathore... do these names ring a bell with you if not then pls let me introduce them as the Shooters who have bring laurels to India on the international arena, who was the last indian before Abhinav to bring a Gold in the olympics, the answer is that its been such a long time since anybody has won any olympic gold that i dont even remember, banning airguns is a loose comment, pls rectify your sense of things, what you should be promoting is how to do a good parenting, most of examples that you have stated are results of bad parenting and lack of awarness regarding gun safety, if some kid run overs on a pedestrian because his father thought it is so cool to have young kids driving fast cars, then i would say his father is a moron and not make some hues and cries to ban manufcaturing and ownerships of cars in India.

Dear Media pls grow up."

You have got to be kidding me. Talk about 'Gutter Press'. For all I know, they will would want to ban spoons and forks stating that they are a threat to society.

Ah finally after numerous attempts yesterday and today i was able to submit it.
Luckily the initial one was not submitted as it was written rather crudely.

p.s. Look at what some nut has written.

Please do not bring in to India slowly the US culture of having a gun as a fundamental right of a person. Soon the habit of using toys become an obesession to have a real gun. Please impose laws on the manufactuers. That will resolve the problem. Many are either killed or injured every day in the US.
