Guidlines and checklist to anyone buying a new gun...

Post by TRD » Fri Jun 18, 2010 4:17 am

Hi,

I tried looking around for posts that would offer generic advise or a set of points/checklist that the buyer needs to check while picking up a new gun, I couldn't find much anywhere :( wondering if any of you could offer your expertise on this subject! This post would be really helpful to me and could serve as a reference to any newbies looking to buy air guns...
The question I had is - could someone offer a set of guidelines or checklists that need to be done before buying a gun? This could be a standard process that you follow while buying your guns or just general advise!
Once I/We have decided on the make, model, color of the gun and decide to buy it what do we need to look for?
ex:
-If it is break barrel, check if the barrel locks well
-Check if the barrel is bent or straight
-Do we fire a dry shot? Yes? no?

Stuff like that... Any advise would be appreciated!

In Word its very difficult to draw a step by step by guide, basically it will be varry based on model , like break barrel, SSP, CO2 etc etc , but these are some basic things that you should always check.

1. Barrel , quality of Barrel , Check for Rifling , look for Lands and grooves distribution, check for locking mechanism, check barrel seal, once action is closed ( In case of Break Barrel) how barrel is aligned with body , is it pointing upwards / downwards / straight ? Is there too much playing in the hinge ?

2. Sights , how sights are made , Are they fixed and tight after adjustement ? are the V notch crispy and clear and align straight with front sight, what kind of front sight it has , globe , post , etc, how front sight is attached with barrel , welded ? dovetail group ? or just plain drilled , avoid the last one if possible

3. Compression chamber , should be inspected carefully , how much cocking effort is required ? is cocking smooth ? look carefully how hinged are attached with cylinder , if its welded are they aligned properly, Since you cannot open the cylinder its not possible to know if its reamless or not but incase you are in a position to choose, go for reamless cylinder only. Usually while cocking I put my finger on the air passing vent of cylinder to feel the suction pressure while holding the barrel carefully with other hand, but since its extreamly dangerous as slipping the barrel will result loosing your finger, I wont recommend this method to anyone. DONT ATTEMPT TO DO IT .

4. Trigger , How its locking the sear, Experienced person can judge by its sound while cocking, How hard the trigger feel during firing (trigger pull). Can trigger weight be adjusted ?

5. Cocking lever : is it solid and strong enough to compress a high tension powerful spring.

6. How stock are desgined, Are you feeling comfortable and sights are properly aligned at one go after mounting ? is there any recoil pad ? How good is the stock finish ? How Pistol grip is designed ? is it chekered ? if yes howz the quality of checkering , or if it stippling again check for quality, how about small of the butt ? is it checkered too ?

7. overall presentation , bluing , finishing of the rifle, is it too heavy ? too light ? too big/ small for you ?

8. Fire few shot with pellets ( NO DRY FIRE AT ALL , in case of springers ) how much recoil it have, Does it produced a thud sound when piston hits the cylinder wall , if its metalic sound , means the washer is not good or its not prducting enough cushion for the piston, Does it smoke too much , if yes there are too much lube inside the cylinder , did the pellet hit the inteded place , fire few pellets if possible from vice or clamp and check for the grouping. how pellets sitting inside the barrel ? if its too tight ? too loose ? Pellets should be moderately tight all the way in the barrel.

9. Apply your common sense and overall feeling about the rifle, Ask yourself what is the best feature of this rifle and what is the worst and then decide your self how important that feature is while considering shooting.

Above are mainly applicable for Break Barrel springer, these are some major points that you should check while buying a break barrel . May be there are few more which I cant remember at this time may be others can contribute more.
Thanks and Regards,
Saptarshi

Great post, Saptarshi.

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.

One can check the breech seal/air leakage by sucking air from barrel end so as to feel that how long vaccum remains when barrel is locked.

All that you want to know is available on this site.

If you do not want to take the trouble of going through the site you can search on www search engines for the information.

Mercifully, common sense and ones own judgement is yet to be converted into a process or a checklist.

As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.

Thanks for the great post Saptharishi! Really clarifies a a lot for any newbie looking to buy a new gun :)

M, thanks a ton for your opinion. As mentioned in my post, I did try looking for this info through the forum but I didn't find much. I found a few here and there but since I don't know anything about guns I didn't know anything about guns, I didn't know if those posts covered all the bases and HENCE this post.
The same with search engines, I got the info but wasn't sure I'd it covered all bases and most of the search engines speak of non-Indian guns. Since the quality and make of the Indian guns are different I decided to ask opinion here.
And for some reason the keyword search on this forum doesn't seem to work.

I did try my options before starting this thread, I'd appreciate it if you had asked me why I started this thread instead of offering your 2cents and saying I lack common sense.

Even now when Mr. Saptharishi said "no dry shots from s spring action gun." I wanted to know why the difference and the importance of dry shots but I haven't asked that. I'm googling that info and only I don't get answers there will I post the question here...

I hate to take away from the great informative post offered by Mr. Saptharishi and have to calrify things with you... But I truly appreciate Mr. Saptharishi's post the info he provided really has helped me a lot and am sure other newbies who might visit this forum.

Annoyed with me but a wiser one now. Have you figured out what you want now and more importantly have you figured out what you want to do with what you want ?

Whatever air rifle you have in mind, your buying decision should be based on the following factors in the given order.

- Accuracy (of course as high as possible)
- Balance of the air rifle (not too muzzle heavy or butt heavy)
- Weight (lesser the better)
- Force required for cocking (lesser the better)
- Power (825fps in .177 and 615fps in .22)
