Wow, didn't realise that membership of the Chennai club was so expensive! Then again, I'd think the cost of membership would be driven by what facilities the club provides, whether or not it "owns" the premises on which it is located or simply leases the land from a govt. agency at a nominal rate, in many cases how socially "exclusive" the club is also affects the rate of membership etc. I don't know the details, so cannot comment about what exactly this club has to offer... By comparison the NRAI does not own any shooting facilities of it's own, neither are NRAI members entitled to use the facilities of any clubs/ associations affiliated with the NRAI. There are many other associaitions/ clubs (state/ district/ etc.) which also have no shooting facilities available for their members. I'd imagine their membership fees would be substantially cheaper.

At one time NRAI members used to be able to purchase imported ammo and sometimes also book imported firearms at rates which were cheaper than what was being charged in the open market... but those days are long gone! Members do get to purchase Indian (KF) ammo directly from NRAI, at slightly cheaper rates than what is charged by dealers (I believe there may be a slight tax differential). But I digress...

Cheers!

Well Abhijeet, The fact is the Chennai club has actually lost it's purpose. It has now become more of a status symbol to hold a membership with the club than for it's actual intended purpose. I'm from Chennai and i'm sure that many members will second that. Not a case of sour grapes. Sadly that's the fact.

You're right BD..

This's exactly the reason why shooting enthusiast in general are so reluctant to take up the sport seriously..

We've so much talent in our country but unless and until sport persons get proper platform and training facilities.. we just cant compete at the highest level..

One thing we seem to miss out on. A rifle club membership only spares you the tax part. So if one were to import a .177 without a membership (since a .177 air rifle is not categorized a band item) what would be the tax bracket? 30%...40%??? If thats the case, then importing it this way would still be cheaper. Any members have any experience through this route? And if i'm right, (can't remember clearly) a certain member (now band) had mentioned that when he imported his .177, the customs at that port of entry said that he would have to pay tax or something like that. My apologies if i'm wrong.

BD.

@ Big Daddy

Nice question. Can we also examine the issue of getting a .22 by paying the applicable duty ? [ Let us assume that all the relevant docs are ready - Club membership & letter ]
When we last spoke you had mentioned that this was possible, but I just can't seem to find the relevant link on IFG!

as far as I know it is not a caliber but power of air gun used to determine how to treat this particular air gun, as fire arm which is banned or as airgun.

That's right Subal. So if I bring in a low fps without a club membership, what would it be?. I do have a club membership but I guess the answer to this question would definitely benefit a lot of members ....especially the Chennai guys  .
