Which rules says you cannot?
The rules say that a person who has a club membership can import an airgun "duty Free" it does not say that only persons who have club memberships can import.
I personally know of people who have imported stuff this way.

what does it mean by restricted according to you?snIPer wrote:No Sir - that is a misconception.
Secondly, since you know few of your pals imported via post and having NO membership. Why don't you publish those papers which will be a great help for others here? I am sure you can do that much. A week time should be ok for you? I would personally be interested to know in which clause they charge the duty.

Re: Airgun import experiences - via post/ courier route
Sniper, to the best of my knowledge airguns are under the "restricted" category of imports - which basically means that you need an import license to import these, something which has also been pointed out above by Tirths.
The FIRST notification which relaxed this rule stated that the imports would be "free" for members of clubs/ associations, i.e. they would NOT need an import license to be able to import these, but they were still liable to pay applicable duties etc. Thus the imports were made "free" in the sense of not needing prior paperwork/ approval/ import license BUT NOT "free" in the sense of being duty free. If you read the first few pages on this thread you will see that this is exactly what was happening soon after this notification came out.
The SECOND notification in this regard waived the import duties for members of clubs/ associations, making the imports truly "free" in the sense of being duty free.
This does not cover import via personal baggage as that would be covered by baggage rules.
If your friends got away without having to produce a membership card, then they were simply lucky - good on them! If other's wish to take the risk (of importing without being a member of a club/ association) on the strength of your friends luck, then all I can say is it's their time & their dime...
Cheers!

Like I had mentioned earlier in the same topic, there have been instances when rifles packed inside suit cases were allowed thru scot-free.. but these are just a stroke of chance and should not be termed as procedure.

...and people have also managed to import several airguns and carton loads of pellets duty free while availing transfer of residence... once again - good on them! But would anyone here suggest others take that risk? Of course not! We all know that rules get bent in this country but we should only pass on "genuine" information to our fellow enthusiasts so as to ensure that no one gets into any trouble due to false/ incomplete/ faulty information...TenX wrote:Like I had mentioned earlier in the same topic, there have been instances when rifles packed inside suit cases were allowed thru scot-free.. but these are just a stroke of chance and should not be termed as procedure.
BTW if coming back into India and carrying an airgun in personal baggage, you are not liable to declare it unless the total value of goods imported exceeds the duty free allowance. In which case you would of course be liable to pay duty -UNLESS it is in .177 calibre AND you are a member of a rifle club/ association in which case it would be duty free.

Re: Airgun import experiences - via post/ courier route
Yup.. but the declaration of carrying an air gun is required in most countries while flying into India. If I am not mistaken, this in entered into your ticketing details too.mundaire wrote:Nope.. its a lottery that may just be outdatedTenX wrote:...and people have also managed to import several airguns and carton loads of pellets duty free while availing transfer of residence... once again - good on them! My point was that despite letting Delta Air or Air France know about your carrying an air gun in your luggage, the screening guys in Indian airports 'may' (a BIIIG may) ignore the substance in the luggage. Then again, this is a lottery close to the Grand Sumo European Lotto
Sincere advise.. stick to the rules, be prepared and confident

Re: Airgun import experiences - via post/ courier route
You are right TenX, one is liable to inform the airline that one is carrying an airgun in their baggage as it is classified under the "dangerous goods" category and treated pretty much at par with carrying a firearm (as per airline rules). Not sure if it is entered on to ticketing details, but the bag(s) with such items are most definitely "specially" marked and tracked more closely throughout their transit. In fact IIRC there was a post by a US based gun blogger a couple of years back, in which he had suggested (in all seriousness), that one should ALWAYS travel with an airgun in their baggage - to ensure that the bags are never lost by the airline!
As you say, the only sincere advise one can/ should give others is to stick to the rules completely, and not mull over what others have gotten away with - to ensure minimum hassle and 100% success!
Cheers!

Not really true, Dhakkan (Deccan) air line guys once lost my Diana 52 from a Bangalore to Delhi flight. All guns are stored in a special compartment in air crafts .Laoding guys at Delhi airport forgot to take it out and plane left for Mumbai.
