By "grooves" I take it you mean rifling? Well, rifling in the barrel imparts a spin to the projectile (bullet/ pellet) to stabilize it thus improving the range and accuracy. Prior to the invention of rifling, all guns used to be "smooth bore" i.e. they had no "grooves". When rifling was invented, to differentiate between guns with rifling and without, the ones with rifling began to be referred to as rifles.

Just an update on this. seems that Bhatia (same company that makes shotguns) is nothing but what was earlier called "NewLite"

just found this in the for sale section -

Gunshop is offering me brand new .22 under lever of NewLite for 3k . Fit and finish seems to be ok ,
but could any body tell about performence.
