I need a general information. If I want to import IZH 46M air pistol from the US through a relative who is returning from US, considering that the relative is gun illiterate, can he carry the pistol in his baggage (cargo)? What are the prerequisites on his part and what are the ones from my part? I mean does he have to inform the airline by which he would be travelling? Does he need to have any documents on him? And suppose he lands at Mumbai or Chennai from US, should I be physically present at that point with the documents (what are the documents)??? Please explain the process in detail.
If ordering in the US, which portal provides the best price?
Also it will be good if you post the answer to your question above on the forum once you have the thing sorted out.

Thanks.

Shouldn't this question be on the other thread (import experiences via post/courier route)? Or are you planning on having it delivered to a friend in USA who will then carry it back?

I am evaluating both options at this point to see which is better in dependability, in terms of price and lower in hassles.

Then please try and post on the correct thread (for the question you have in mind). It save the moderator team the hassle of having to split posts and shift things around... plus it will also get you a better response... everyone ends up happy ;)

Abhijeet, i think you misunderstood my question. If opting for the baggage route (whether it is me or someone on my behalf who is carrying this gun), in this case where there is no oversees delivery involved, which is the best web site in terms of price and dependability to order this from?

Hello
I had earlier wanted to bring an aer rifle from Singapore through a friend and he went to Hock Ann Pte Ltd in Singapore to enquire, he was told that entry through Chennai airport was not possible and he refused to sell unless there was a letter from the customs and the police stating that there was no ban on import of air rifles. My enquiries at various sources also reveal the same mentality at Chennai, maybe we should do something about it.

Hi Sayyad,

There is no energy restriction in India per se, though sometimes a simple wood penetration test is performed. For details on how to go about importing an airgun please see the following threads:

Airgun import experiences - via personal baggage route

Airgun import experiences - via post/ courier route

Thanks abhijeet

The power in these airguns are variable (600-1300 ft/s for .22).
This is means it will very from 10 to 50 fout-pound.

How authorities at Delhi airport would conduct wood test.
At high velocity definitely the pellet will break the wood.

Please guide me in this regard.

Regards

I have never seen the test being conducted, as it is not very frequently conducted. At max, all they typically ask for is that someone from the police arms branch come and certify that it is indeed and airgun and not a firearm. Anyhow I believe it involves a 1" thick block of deal wood being shot at (I am not sure at what range). If the pellet passes through the block, the gun fails the test.

There is no specification/ restriction as to the muzzle energy in India. Just this test harking back to pre-independence years...

Cheers!

The distance is five feet and this air-rifle cannot be owned legally without a firearms licence for the same.

What's more, you can only import .177" calibre airguns via post or courier. Just thought I would mention this in case that is what you were thinking of doing.

Rusty, If I am not mistaken we have no law here that states that airguns which have power beyond an average one needs a FAC.

You are very much mistaken, Sniper. Check a firearm licence (mine's with the coppers at the moment) and you will find there is a provision for airguns failing the deal wood test.
