Can i bring Airgun from Dubai to Mumbai on flight

Post by Rahul » Sun Oct 28, 2007 4:49 pm

Hi All,

i m planing to buy "RWS Hammerli 850 AirMagnum Combo" from Dubai and to bring it to Mumbai with me on flight. But i m still not clear on few things.
This CO2 air rifle is 8-shot repeater with magazine & bolt action. plz chk the url for further details: http://www.pyramydair.com/p/rws-850-co2-air-rifle.shtml

My questions are:
1. Can i bring this airgun on check in luggage on flight(GulfAir) to Mumbai?
2. What is the exact procedure to bring this airgun with me to Mumbai?
3. Is there any customs duty at Mumbai Airport? or any additional charges?
4. Do i need any additional papers or cirtificate from the shop? as i dont have any shooting club membership either in Dubai or in Mumbai.
5. Is it possible to get CO2 cylinders for the airgun in Mumbai??

any urgent suggestion or advise will be appriciated.

Thnx
Rahul

Hi Rahul
i just got a crossman co2 from uk, broke it in two parts, and stored in checked bagged. kept the co2 serperate. had no problems and both airports.

however be carful as i found out that airlines take serious view to when carying co2. (silly in some ways as they also have oxgen bottles on plane) being safe, as airline do not know the conditon of the co2 bottles. please check other links as i found some good points when shipping air rifles.

hi,
pls follow the link below, you would get most of the answers related to self import as baggage, although its about a springer still if u get your rifle dry,it wud be considered a hazardless airrifle,no co2 no hazard :)
and yes dont pack the rifle mounted with the scope in the case, incase you are selecting one with the scope, dismount and get your scope in your baggage separately.

hi,

after going through indar's experience on (http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?t=2315), i found the procedure very challenging and interesting ;-). He has explained d procedure in his own unique style. Thnx sanjiv.. ;-)

but as Nagarifle has suggested to break it in two parts and store in checked baggage with seprate CO2, will that really help in terms of reducing Customs duty or lengthy paper work at AirPort? Bcos the sales-man in d shop suggested me the same thing.

one more thing, still not sure abt carrying the CO2 cylinders on flight. Jst gone through many links but cant find any specific answer.

One more thing abt the CO2 cylinders availibility in India, especially in Mumbai. where can i buy it in Mumbai?

thnx
Rahul

nagarifles suggestion or the shop owners suggestions ,wud be your personal take,..
since i wud never consider doin that  ,
remember and picture the xray screen ,your stock and the barrel and the men in white  ,
and i had never seen till date a 88 gram co2 cartridge here in pune or mumbai, the smaller ones of 12grams are available in mumbai ,and bangalore sometimes depending on stock.

please consider all aspects very carefully while you select your rifle.
i wud suggest you to go through most of the topics here in this forum and you def wud self find most of the answers you were looking for.

Rahul,

Nagarifle may have removed stock from action so as to fit it in his suitcase.

If you want suggestions on how to evade customs duty or procedures, you will not find that information here and neither are such posts tolerated on this site.

as sanjiv points out which i would agree with, best to play it safe. What works for me may not work for you. from my point of view if i am ask to pay duties i would do so. my bottom line in dealing with coustoms is this, if you can not afford to lose it then cover all angles, as sniper fire can come from any side.

you should also check out the other links on the forum, for more info, i am not able to locate any co2 bottles here.

But i do know that some co2 type rifle can have reuseable bottles, which i am sure can be filled up localy, also consider rifles which can be filled with bicycle type pumps. cost will be more but in long run no hassel with air lines etc.

Also try doing all the paper work before leaving India, as it would apper that coustoms at differnt cities have different policy.

my two cents: yes, the airlines suspicion of gas filled cyinders is justified. boyle's law......high altitude, low pressure, gas expansion.....dodgy cylinder... boom boom....swimming with arabian sea sharks

and no, they do not have oxygen bottles on aircraft. they use oxygen candles: chemical oxygen generators. they're not dumb, you know!

also, please check with your airline on where their happiness lies. while i'm sure they'll accept this as checked in baggage, some airlines insist you carry you airgun in a flight approved gun case, rather than suitcase. best to check, rather than waste check in time and risk losing your flight or airgun.

and i echo everybody's sentiments. wherever you store your gun ....suitcase/guncase/vanity case, do not mess with customs. (not that i'm in any way implying that you're trying to!) do not try to play smart with them and do not break the rules. it's not worth the hassle.

best of luck!

Hi Rahul,

Vistors can buy airguns without a permit in Dubai ,but you have to hold a bill of the same in arabic for the cops at the airport to read and know its only an airgun ! They will inspect the same nevertheless. The dealer also advised me that only whilst travelling on Emirates your need to call their reservations 48 hrs prior and inform them that you will be carrying an airgun in checked baggage.Air India and Cathay pacific do not need any intimation as along as its checked in as baggage.
You can carry an airgun in your suitcase. You will not be allowed to carry any form of compressed gas no matter how small the cylinder through the airport security at dubai . They will confiscate the same!period!
Hope the above is helpful to you. Apprec pls double check the above rules with IFG member Shahid who is based in dubai.

With regards to the customs on arrival , Hami's advice will leave you in good standing with the snowflakes on arrival.
Take care!

from what has been stated i would stand corrected. to the following points.

do not avoid customs duty. do not carry co2, and what ever happens on arrivel one has to greet the gents in white with 35% duty.

i would advice one to have a smaller gun case ie shotgun type or smaller then that, as to reducess weight and size if one can brake the air rifle in two parts.

as i am sure we are all gleaming info from others mistake, which is far less painful then one owns.

One more point to add Rahul,
should your air-rifle get confiscated on arrival in Mumbai by the customs,do not be alarmed, its just procedure! They will request you to get an obtain a N.O.C from the arms department at the Police Comm.office-stating that the said gun is not a firearm. This could entail you to escort a sepoy or a customs officer with your airgun to the comm.office and back. After they recieve this letter they will then release the airgun to you after the duty of 35percent(normally) is paid.
Hence give youself a day after you arrive for this procedure.
Good luck!
