Importing airguns into India

Idea of becoming Reknowned shot and get Duty exemption looks pretty sick to me. I am a former state level badminton player. I know that how hard it is to compete using our indegenious equipment. I left the sport in 1996 and till today we do not make anything acceptable in badminton. Still looking for Yonex, Carlton, Prince, etc.

Sadly when it comes to shooting then the problem becomes even worse due to sorry state of our defense production. We all know what firearms we make and what they can be used for.

Recently had a fit of love for indegeneous production and got my self IHPs 0.177 pistol and used it on 10m ragnge. Following are details -
1) Has the worst grip you can imagine. Perhaps for axe.
2) Sights are aligned but where will the shot go, thats needs to be guessed. Gun jumps like a horse in you hand. Grip plays its role.
3) After 200 shots, the cocking mechanism broke. It just plain broke.

Considering this I doubt that one has to become a reknowned shot for availing duty exemption using something that is made in India. Perhaps this flows from deep rooted Indian problem of always adding DESERVE FIRST clause to everything. Anyways, perhaps I digressed a bit but thats what I think.

Thanks folks for the advise. I understand that I may not get exemption (if any) since I am not a reknowned shot but I will count on
1) That duty will not exceed 30-35% of CIF value
2) I might get as lucky as Dev if I order IZH46...

I have mailed to blackpool air rifles a week back for purchase of HW 45 pistol and today i have got a mail from lloyd mentioning that TNT courier is not accepting air guns because they say these are firearms and lloyd is saying we will be unable to send anything till this matter is sorted out with TNT.

Well if you are damn serious for 10M air pistol shooting, why dont you consider brands like Steyr, Walther, Morini, Pardini etc.There are a couple of more like Benelli, Feinwerkbau, Haemmerli, Anschutz, all European, world class, reliable and reputed. I am not confusing you. Rest assured.
Whats your budget for a pistol?

I will probably select from
1) IZH-46M
2) Rohm Twinmaster Top
As these tow guys fit my budget. And I am sure that they both will be very good for 10m pistol shooting...

Keep in mind - the Rohm is a PCP air-pistol, so besides the cost of the gun, you will have to (at the very least) consider buying spare cylinders and a manual pump. So your total cost outlay will probably be higher than just the price of the pistol.

Check if the twin master is allowed according to ISSF rules for ten meter. A good range will have compressed air tanks to fill your cylinders. Siri Fort at Delhi does.

hey hunter thanks for that info i would like to know a few things: i intend to go over to my brother in da states, while i am there i am thinking of picking up an air rifle please do let me know if i can carryt the co2 one or if i could get home a .22 air rifle

also do lt me know what all i need to bring back a .177 air rifle as in do i need to be a member of any shooting club or need any thing else apart from the bill, do i need to claim it and all please do let me kno the procedure i am totally clueless

No Airline would carry filled in CO2 capsules ; i.e. if you are asking about the capusules.

"Totally clueless" ..... that's what you feel even after the topic of bringing in Airguns being the most discussed about here ? Why don't you go through the threads in the Airguns section ?

read it but there was no mention about the billing thing nor about air pressurised but yes read that only .177 can be imported but our friends have got in .22 of late so was asking if its legal now or were they counting on indian customs capability

As far as I know, a .22" calibre airgun brought in as baggage has never been illegal.

Hi Sid,

Co2 capsules are not allowed in check-in baggage,period!
My personal experience with the customs has been a hit and a miss affair.
.177/.22 caliber is legal if included with personal baggage as Mack The Knife mentioned.
But ,there is always an air of anxiety when one arrives at the customs hall,as it depends a lot on the officers interpretation of the law.
IMO,its best to carry your club card(if u are a member)as it could further validate your genuine interest in the sport.

I possess an Indian made .177 branded "Tommy" since i was 15. I was the 2nd best shot in my NCC days but then after moving to Delhi i have lost touch. Now i wish to start fresh and i am looking to import a Diana or an HW. I wish to know other than the price and postage, what and how much custom duty is involved on importing a 0.177. Also, is it allowed to import a 0.22 at all?
