Long Range Shooting

Hello dear IFgians,

What is the maximum range you guys have attempted to shoot at and pulled off some sort of grouping?
i know there are a lot of scattered posts loosely pertaining to this but nothing concrete as of such.


i've shot at an 8" X 8" target from about 40 metres and managed to hit it a few times as such( absymal grouping,will post pictures later)
the drop was an astounding 4 feet :/
Also i've shot a deo can from about 275 feet and the pellet penetrated both sides.

Do share pics of your sniping

P.S. I use a precihole SX100 Orion with a chinese Bushnell 3-9x40 scope.

Hi Arjan,
We have been able to get the precihole to group less than an inch out at 40meters. This was done with the rifle rested on sand bags.
Handheld, hitting beer cans is relatively easy at this distance. Have no pictures of the grouping, but we should be shooting this weekend too so hopefully will have pics soon

I have few questions for you,
1. What grain pellets are you using?
2. The drop of four feet is at 40 meters or at 275feet/90 meters?
3. What was hold over for the 275 feet shot?
Deo cans are of a thicker guage, penetrating it on both sides at 275 feet is a feat!

P.s. hope 275 isnt a typo

1) For today's 40m shooting i used mastershot master hunt pellets which i think weigh north of 20gr. They're actually REALLY heavy.Put 200 of them in a precipell box and was shocked by the weight.

2) My bad ,in my haste i forgot to mention it. got around 6 inches of drop at 40m .When i moved to approximately 60 ,the drop increased greatly to around 2.5 feet(4 may have been an exaggeration ) I think its due to the excess flab on the master hunt.At 40m ,standing deo can shots were relatively easier though (albeit took a few attempts to get them down). Got so frustrated with the target that i put in a few arrows through it just so it appeared more hol(e)y.

3) i measured the 275 feet by counting the tiles on the floor so i may be a bit off .Could be around the 260ft mark. At that time i used precipell 15gr pellets which give superior velocities when used on the SX/NX, than anything else. Drop around 2.5 feet if i remember.Probably accomplished with a bit of luck though

Additionally,i'd like to mention that the scope i use is a chinese copy of a Bushnell( got conned) ,hence it doesn't hold its zero very well and seems rather unpredictable.I coaxed a friend into bringing a new one from the US.any suggestions?

Hi Arjan,

In my opinion, 20+ grains is a bit of an overkill over a 12fpe air rifle. I have got the best results with the precipells but you could also go for the JSB exact 15grn for better consistency over different production lots.
With regards to plinking better at 40m ranges, use the above mentioned pellets and dig out the thread "never fight a spring powered air rifle" posted by brihaji. The thread mentions various aspects of shooting a springer better like using the artillery hold etc, it does make a noticeable difference in accuracy.

15 feet plus or minus doesnt matter much, being able to hit something at 75+ meter range with a springer and a not so brilliant scope is a commendable feat buddy
I am tempted to give the same a try asap! Surprised that the pellet penetrated at that distance.

If you have some one getting a scope for you, see what suits your needs best in terms of zoom range, mildots/half mildots etc. Stick to makes like vortex, leupold, hawke etc

Yeah true that. I got these pellets basically for experimentation and for the price they're pretty good.Thanks for the info,will check it out.

How good is this Benjamin Trail NP XL Air Rifle for long distance shooting? Is it a good rifle for long range or do I have to order Beeman X2

A drop of 4 feet translates to a half second flight from muzzle. At 40 meters that works out to an average pellet velocity of 80 meters per second. Probably too low. Are you sure the range was not longer? Or the telescopic sight may be doing funny things - like scope creep. Does the sight hold its position at shorter ranges?

Oh - I just saw your second message - 6 inches drop. That is more like it

I have got groupings of 2-3 inches across at 25 meters with an Orion, standing artillery hold, open sight.But I currently have no place to shoot more than that.

These are the worst pellets I have used in my entire life. I would suggest that nobody should buy them.

I agree,having shot 100+ of these,i've realized that the accuracy is extremely poor.
But they've got good penetration power, they pack quite a punch upon impact.

The Benjamin Trail NP seems like a better bet in terms of absolute power since it shoots at 1200 FPS. However, any projectile that approaches the speed of sound (mach 0.8 to 1.2) may suffer from The transonic problem. I've never fired from such a high powered airgun so i'll leave it to the more experienced individuals here to explain it but here is a link if you're curious.
