When I was growing up, most all my guns had steel or plastic recoil pads and I always thought it curious that my biggest pad was on my air rifle. I do find an advantage of this is that I can stick a couple dozen pellets in the diamond shaped holes so that when I grab my gun to take it for a walk in the woods it always has a supply of pellets with it.
Just something handy I thought I'd pass on.

Re: Ventilated recoil pads
Great minds think alike Mark - years ago I had a Ruger 10/22 that was factory fitted with a ventilated recoil pad ( as if it needed one ! ) and I used to stuff .22 lrs in the `vents`. They were securely held, didn`t get damaged and were conveniently to hand.
