Powerful long range gun
Over the last few months, ive read many posts in adverts sections or other enquiries wanting "powerful" or "long range" rifles, shot guns or even air guns/air pistols.
I just want to enquire what these fellow members mean by "powerful" or "long range" and why would they want these qualities.
Shotgun: "powerful" depends on ammo. Do you mean chambered for magnums?
Long range: forget what it depends on. Why want it? i can shoot 60 metres with 50g 3.5" supermagnum with beretta extrema but can i hit a clay at that distance?
rifle: powerful and range depends on ammo. but even so its more important to have a flatter shooting accurate rifle esp one you are comfortable with. in a survey conducted in professional big game hunters .375 was voted as the best rifle overall even for dangerous game. Now considering elephants it is 'underpowered' compared to its other cousins but as it is flatter and other qualities its better.
Similarly, if i have a 6BR which can shoot accurately for more than a km, does that mean i can hit a target at a km?
In both the above, if one considers home defence, one doesnt need long range and even the 'least powerful' shotguns and centrefires are enough to kill an assailant.
Handguns dont apply as even the "powerful" ones in india are onderpowered (ish)
Airguns:
home defence doesnt apply.
What do you intend to use it for? and why want "power" and "long range"? for plinking? target shooting? Wouldnt accuracy be more important and a more desirable quality?
one cant do "patake bara bora de" with an airgun and it doesnt matter in firearms.

You want more gun control? Use both hands!

Ideal would be a MIRV'ed ICBM. You could take out a small country with a decent one.
The most powerful and 'accurate' gun to say 1500 yards/meters without busting your bank each time you pulled the trigger would be a .338 Lapua Magnum. An AI built one will hold under 1 MoA. A little more price and better acuracy would be the DSR-1/2. However a DSR will break the bank as the cheapest one for sale I have come across is about 20K Euros without a scope.
For me a 6 BR and .260 Rem meet all my needs. I did have a .300 WM which really shines beyond 600 yards but I tired of the recoil.
Even shooting at 100 meters is affected by wind in most calibers. Beyond 100 you really need to start understanding wind and mirage well.
Why do people always want the most powerful gun, well mine is bigger than yours.

Re: Powerful long range gun
big cal rifles are quite heavy to carry for hunting.
DPMS made few good rifles for hunting, semi auto with moderate recoil even in .338, not heavy and not expensive.

Why do you want a beretta, yesterday i shot a crow flying with my badly worn out indian s/s with shaktiman #1 23/4" at more than 60 yrds

Naga, If you are planning to shoot that far, have you given a thought to the type of scope? The Hubble, I guess should do the trick?

Re: Powerful long range gun
Dear Naga,
In one stroke I can solve all your problems but you must acquiese to my humble request. If you agree to upgrade to 125 mm, then heres what I have for you;
T -90 Main Battle Tank
Advantages;
1. Air cooled, so you can go hunting in Rajasthan.
2. Thermal Laser Sights, will help you locate your quarry even in the dark and in all weather at great distances.
3. No need for cumbersome gun carriage, the T-90 can take you and your entourage comfortably over most terrain.
4. Huge storage space for ammo, assuming that you are a good shot, then replace the ammo with beer, or other such useful and necessary soul reviving refreshments.
5. Ample deck at the rear of the engine, will hold even a wild buffalo.
6. Engine makes a deep throated sound, so you can ignore your wife's calling and tell her later that you didnt hear her at all.
7. A lovely smoothbore 125 mm gun, with several different kind of ammo, I recommend the HEAT, which will help you to save time, since the quarry will be sufficiently roasted.
Hope you enjoy, place order fast, the russians can air courier/drop it straight into your courtyard.
Now what more can you ask, eh ?

Re: Powerful long range gun
Hey fellows,
What would be the best caliber for a 300 mts match? Please suggest? One with loads of power, flatter trajectory, affordable ammo and moderate recoil so your shoulder doesnt turn blue after 60+ shots.
Please advise.
