doubt about calibres.

i have a big doubt about calibres of weapons. for eg.- an ak47 has a caliber of 5.56. on the other hand a machine gun (mg) has a caliber of .50 (generally). now the ak47's calibre is lesser than the mg's but now the nos. on the ak 47 might mean that it is bigger by 5.06. ditto for pistols rifles etc.what is the general measurement ?

AK is 5.56 mm while the 0.5 calibre is in inch..

the 5.56 X 45 mm round is generally used by the US and NATO forces.
The 5.45 X 39 mm round is used in the AK74, AK47 and the AKSU-74 carbine/sub-machine.
The .50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun) is used by US and NATO forces (among others).

here is classification of calibres in case of AKs

AK 74, AK 74M, AK 74 U, and AK 105 ALL take 5.45x39mm,
AK 101 & AK 102 takes 5.56x45 mm
AK 47, AK 47S, AK 103, AK 104 ALL takes 7.62x39 mm

it is available in 7.62 also . but it has to be rebarreled to 7.62. the uk SAS uses 7.62. the original AK 47 had 5.56 so i am sticking to it only.

Can I ask you from where you have obtained this information.

The Soviets had something called the Cold War going on with the NATO countries.They would have thrown themselves on their AK bayonets before using NATO standard calibers.

Are you sticking to your AK 47 in 5.56mm or are you sticking to your stand, whatever that may be?

The original (as you put it) AK47 came in 7.62x39 as has already been pointed out.

hey! i apologise my bad. the ak came in 7.62x39mm .http://world.guns.ru/assault/as01-e.htm . In africa it was rebarreled to 5.56 in some countries (news article on the civil war in somalia). the uk sas - special air service(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Air_Service) (a highly trained special operations team equivalent to the russian specnaz, french gign,german gsg-9, or the indian marcos)uses this type of an ak47 -

AKM also takes 7.62x39mm. Introduced around 1958 in USSR with stamped reciever to replace the original AK47, this was the standard Soviet Service rifle between the AK47 with milled or machined reciever and the AK74 in 5.45x39mm. In other words the Soviet military AK type rifles made between 1958 or so and as soon after 1974 that the AK74 was put into production would be AKM type rifles.
