Court martial unless they can pin this on some one else Know a story about a retired army person who luckily found a carbine in a field after army exercise then very tactfully returned it to the unit CO. Wasnt pretty for the officer. Another IPS officer misplaced his gun and then had his staff search/question every one in his household didnt even spare his in laws including Father in law

...his driver found the gun stuck in cars back seat cushion ( or as the stories goes).

Police personnel are not court martialled. There will be disciplinary action against him and he will have to pay the price of the carbine and that's it.

If I remember correctly, way back in the 70's the State Police was procuring Stens for about Rs.400...that was about the end of it since virtually all the Stens were of inherited WWII vintage.
As regards 9mm Carbines, in the late 80's-early 90's, I vaguely remember mutterings of Rs.5000/- a piece... this was way before Modernization schemes so most stuff had to be procured at state expense.
...of course that's only what my memory tells me...I could be wrong.

But at the same time, the guy(s) who took it away, or found it and is (are) not reporting it to PS, i suppose, may have bad intentions, and this weapon going in the hands of anti-social elements, may start a new chapter of Police worries.

They wouldn't have taken the weapon while he was sleeping if their intentions were good

They probably wanted to make a quick buck selling it in the black market. Let's hope the cops find it soon, before it's used to harm innocent people.
Maybe they should announce a reward with no questions asked to have it returned.
