2.68 lakh For AK-47

Post by msandhu » Sun Sep 28, 2008 6:34 pm

I thought this is an interesting story

PATIALA: Post-Beijing, the Abhinav effect saw many in Punjab going for guns frantically. But the craze for weapons hasn't ended there. It touched new heights when district transport office fetched a whopping sum for the registration number PB-11-AK-47 — a farmer from Ropar paid Rs 2.68 lakh for the number just because it had AK-47 in it.

On directions from the state transport department, the district transport office held an auction of a new series of registration numbers. As expected, many turned up to grab numbers of their choice, but what left many surprised was that the most wanted number 0001 could only fetch Rs 70,000. It was AK-47 that was most vied for.

Manjinder Singh won the bid and grabbed the number. "My other two cars are numbered 0057 and I wanted to win the same for my new Skoda, but when I learnt about AK-47, I decided to go for it," he said.

Rajesh Kumar, a DTO officer, said: "Usually 0001 number fetches the highest amount — but, perhaps, it is the first time that some other number left our coffers full."

Authorities collected around Rs 15 lakh by auctioning other fancy numbers like 1111, 2222. While the number 0002 went for Rs 80,000, 0005 fetched Rs 55,000.

Wow, that's several times what the "real thing" costs in the black market (if media reports are to be believed)!

Irrespective of the direction of the wind, the smoke from the cigarette will always tend to go to the non-smoker.
