Well known among firearm enthusiasts, the name Elmer Keith is synonymous with gun writing, magnum cartridges such as the .357, .41 and .44 Mags, and of course we can’t forget his Old West personality. Nicknamed “The Last Cowboy” by many, Keith was often seen smoking a cigar and wearing a 10-gallon Stetson hat.

Being a renowned gun writer and having hunted across the globe, Keith assembled a vast collection of firearms by the time of his death, many of which currently belong to his family members through the Elmer Keith Estate Collection. These firearms range from classy antique hunting rifles and shotguns to finely crafted revolvers and rare autoloading pistols.

On March 11-14 and March 13-16, fans of Elmer Keith and of elegant firearms will have the extraordinary chance to purchase unique pieces of Elmer Keith history at auction. The James D. Julia auction house and the Poulin Auction Co. will be selling more than 140 different items in the Elmer Keith Estate Collection.

Any Idea how much they went for, in the auction???
We Indians can dream about it. No law to stop dreams. :D :D :D

Elmer certainly had some amazing guns, didn't he?

The one S&W 44 Magnum and holster shown in the article was of interest -- I wonder if it is one that I had heard about.

While living in Montana, there was a fellow who was some sort of insurance executive who frequented the gun shop. This man was very skilled at gunsmithing 1911s. He had all of the jigs to work the trigger, hammer, and sear surfaces and interactions, and he would perform metal checkering and other modifications. One day, he drove over to Salmon (It's just across the mountain border from Montana -- a very picturesque drive up the Big Hole river valley and past the Big Hole Battlefield, where Col. Gibbon's force fought with the fleeing Nez Perce) and stopped in to see Elmer. Ron showed him his 1911 work and told us that Elmer reached back, pulled out a S&W 44 Magnum from a belt holster, opened the cylinder, and remarked, "I prefer wheel guns, myself."

The guy was sort of crusty and abrasive, and my impression was that he had a bit of a Napoleon complex. However, who really cares -- his work on so many cartridges and the Winchester Model 70 really puts him at the head of the line among gun writers, for not only did he write about stuff, but his accomplishments were second to none.

It's also quite obvious that he had very refined tastes!

Thanks for sharing, Vikram!
