Moin Saab, the gold plated guns are mostly after market customised pcs. We all have our own preferences and tastes.

Arms have been a statues symbol of kings since the times memorial. Officers of various ranks had to carry either khanjar or a Katar on their waist as a weapon of self defense. The higher the rank of the officer the most exquisite his dagger. Starting from gold and silver to Diamonds studded solid gold.

This one at one point belonged to Tippu Sultan. Inscriptions are at times engraved at a later period.

There could be one explanation to this Vikram. When the British gave an option to Tipu Sultan to surrender to the British Raj he denied saying its better live like a king for one day than a coward for a life time. At this point of time the British allied with the Nizam of Hyderabad to defeat the Sultan. There could be a possibility that after the Shear e Tippu was treacherously killed the pcs would have been handed over to the Nizam of Hyderabad as a solidarity of gratitude.

As the Nizams were surnamed Ali Khan, that would explain it....

Interesting theory,Farook. The Asafjahis' official language was Persian until late 19th century and then Urdu. Interesting how Telugu script found its way onto the dagger. The script itself is not like the one used in those times.Makes for a neat investigation.

The history of souvenir weapons can never be predicted Vikram. They would have changed numerous hands over the centuries. I have seen Tanjavur katars with marati inscriptions
