OMG not looking like a real rifle , if it would be a orignal rifle what calibre it might be.

If it was a real rifle that would shoot, I would guess it would be about a 25mm bore if everything scaled up, I wonder if the SKS action cult be scaled up like that. I very much like the SKS action. And it is interesting to think about! Thanks for sharing, Baljit.

The SKS action is basically a scaled-down version of the Russian PTRS 41 14.5mm anti-tank rifle. So that would be a start if you need a bigger SKS.

Considering the designer of the of the SKS and the PTRS 41, the similarities are not very surprising.

Is that a firing rifle or just a scaled up model?
I have often heard that these rifles were designed to be fired with the bayonet extended. I didn't really believe it till last week.

Last week I was at my range and a guy showed up with a rifle that he had spent the winter working on. He had refinished the stock and reblued the barrel. I looked over and said: "nice Mosin". He laughed and said that it was not a Mosin but a Chinese type 53. This was the first time he was actually shooting it. He just had some surplus Russian ammo. He asked me if I wanted to to shoot it. Of Course, I said; "Yes".
At 50 yards (with the stock irons), the groups were a shotgun-like five or six inches. We discussed this and came to the conclusion that you couldn't really expect more out of some thing that old and who knows how it had been treated when it was in service. Then my friend Dave showed up and we started talking about the rifle. He suggested that we extend the bayonet and try firing it. With the bayonet extended, the groups all of a sudden went to about an inch.

Maybe Two Rivers or Tim can chime in here about why this would be the case.

They are calibrated to shoot with the bayonet extended; the Soviet M44s will shoot differently with the bayonet extended, as well. Soviet troops were not allowed to not use the bayoeet (except for the M38 carbine, which was for artillery units and such).

Just like with bedding, the barrels vibrate differently with a bayonet hung on the end.

There is light ball ammo (about 148 grain) and heavy ball (about 174 grains), steel core and lead core, brass case and steel case, and then all this stuff is made by many different companies. It's best to try a bunch of different kinds to see what an individual rifle likes.

For instance, my Finn likes Hungarian Lead core heavy ball, so I've laid a bunch of it by. Also, oddly enough, he fancy Sellier and Ballot Hollow point boat tail didn't shoot too well, but the Finn-like 204 grain Barnaul round nosed hunting rounds shot like gangbusters.

Different horses for different courses, I guess.

XL, you had better stay away from those Mosin Nagants. You are going to get hooked and, when you get hooked on Mosin Nagants, it's a serious thing!

Russian military rifles were sighted to be "on target" with bayonet mounted, the bayonet being considered the primary weapon of the Russian infantry. It will certainly affect the point of impact whether the hinged bayonet is extended; and barrel vibration, which will affect accuracy.
Will have to run some experiments once ammo becomes available again. My only stock of 7.62x54R being 1917 Remington light ball.
The Finns standardized on their 200 grain "D166" bullet, so I would expect heavy ball to do best in their rifles, and shoot closest to the sights.
And yes, a Chinese Type 53 is still a Mosin-Nagant.

Haha!! Guy's this is a just a scaled up model.I really like these pictures so i thought let's have some fun with the other members and see what's there thinking about this toy.

I know there is lot 's of Chinese and Russian SKS rifles in the market now. Here in Canada they are both very papular because ammo so cheep to shoot and everybody like to have a fun with toy.


This is new to me as well, that these rifles were designed to be fired with the bayonet extended. Learn something new everyday.

Baljit, many of the SKSs sold here in the USA over the last few year have been from Yugoslavia. These were always less desirable to me because first, they did not have a chrome lined bore and often suffered from rough barrels due to corrosive primers, and second, there is A large, cumbersome adapter on the muzzle for mounting a grade launcher that adds about 4" to the barrel length.

The Chinese ones, like mine,have chrome bores and are fairly nice. Some have barrels that are pressed not the receivers and pinned, and others, like mine, are threaded into the receivers, but both are seviceable. SKSs are opposite AKs, in that almost all have a forged receiver, but a few have a stamped receiver.

My own opinion is that an SKS action has a more pleasant action to operate than an AK.
