For whatever reasons, the Europeans have always been in the forefront in small arms technology, and that includes the Russians, whether it be handgun, shotgun or rifles.

Small arms development has been pretty spread around, I think. For instance, I believe a good case could be made for John Moses Browning, an American, as the most ingenious and prolific designer of successful arms. Paul Mauser is also rightly recognized as a very skilled developer who greatly influenced gun design. The Nagant brothers of Belgium and Colonel Rudolf Schmidt of Switzerland also had some pretty meaningful contributions in the early days. From there, a host of names spring out.

However, you point about the Russians is very well taken. My belief is that Russian/Soviet science and engineering often get the short shrift in the West. The Garand rifle is rightly admired, for instance, but the SVT was developed nearly at the same time. Conditions in the Soviet Union weren't quite as conducive as they might have been or the SVT would also rank right up there with the semi-auto Garand as the most modern battle rifle of WW2. Russian/Soviet metallurgy was quite sophisticated, and the developments of Simonov, Kalashnikov, Tokarev, etc., are considerable in the field of firearms development.

Moving on to larger developments, the Arms of Krupp (to steal Manchester's title) are highly regarded in the West, but both Soviet and American artillery were equally, if not more effective than the German in WW2. Indeed, the Russians have a tradition for excellence in artillery that goes back to the Crimean War, an excellence that was based on their skilled application of mathematics.

Folks who are dismissive of the intelligence and skills of others, particularly their opponents, do so at their peril.

Timmy et al how could western folks acknowledge Russian engineering etc..This is due age old perception that Russians / serbs et al were not as smart other races in old europe..Soviet Union taught Hitler and world a great lesson in under estimating them..

Yes! For instance, when Marshal Piłsudski, outnumbered massively and cornered in front of Warsaw by Red Marshal Tukhachevsky, and by a masterful movement soundly defeated the Red Army and drove them out of Poland, the West claimed that no Pole, who the West considered a bunch of ignorant buffoons, could conceive and achieve such a stunning victory, snatched from the jaws of certain defeat.

I can tell you from bitter personal experience, Navi, that in the eyes of many, not all "white people" are really "white," and WW2 is testament to exactly this view.

This can be the only explanation for so many in the West, who are so intrigued with Hitler the loser, rather than Stalin the winner, even though both were goons of the highest order.

As it regards guns, the Russians, Czechs, and Poles all had some pretty interesting and ingenious guns!
