Some disturbing news...

Hi guys, just thought I'd share this incident with you all as it might be helpful in the very near future.

Today I flew from Pune to Delhi on Jet Airways with two air pistols, which wasn't an hassle at all... but I was informed by the airlines staff that from the 15th of November, Jet Airways was going to levy a special handling charge of Rs. 5000 on each weapon checked in. They also told me that all airlines were putting into effect a similar policy very soon... what this effectively means is that carrying a pistol with me doubles the cost of my ticket!! :(

Has anyone else on the forum heard of this? Can someone please confirm..? I was given this information by Jet staff both in Pune and Delhi, so it seems pretty legit.

Thanks, and hope this policy doesn't come into effect on all airlines!!

- Shiv

British Airways and other European airlines (Easyjet/Ryanair etc) already charge a handling fee for firearms/airguns, either end. I suppose Jet has simply followed suit.

Some time ago, their website stated they would not carry firearms. At least they now publicly agree. I guess they realised the business they were losing.

Personally, I'd rather pay extra for a hassle free service from someone who knows their job, rather than get bounced between ground staff who have the foggiest idea of what to do with my gun case

@Hamiclar1: I don't know what their website said, but I've carried weapons on board jet for atleast the past 2 years... and maybe because I've gone through only major indian airports, never faced hassle with the ground staff or the security... Just filled the Weapon Declaration and gotten done with the process in a maximum of 40 minutes (even get to cut line to get a boarding pass pretty often!! :p)

@Rajeev: Best of luck not paying a penny when you travel in jet with a weapon! Seriously, all the best! I'm pretty safely in Delhi by the way, thanks for asking, like really! (sarcasm is tough to type out, so this should make it a little explicit)
Introduction, oh yeah!

dr.jayakumar: Exactly my sentiment! Seems damn steep!!

@NK007: Thanks for the confirmation! I got the same confirmed with Jet too. I'm reconsidering carrying back weapons with me to Pune, seems expensive, especially since the ticket is cheaper than 5000 rupees!

To everyone: The news is definitely confirmed, so be aware of it and carry 5000 cash if you are travelling via jet with a weapon!

dear friends,
as of now there is no such instructions or policy from civil aviation authority of india (DGCA). and if JetAirways is charging, they are doing so in their own wisdom.
due to stiff competition between airlines to woo the passengers, this move of theirs, will certainly shift some of revenue. and that is when it will die a natural death. till such time all those who are flying must make it known to jet ,reasons for shifting to other carriers.

regards :)

But, then not every passenger carry guns with them.
so basically there cannot be a big loss in revenue if the weapon holders shift to another airline

well, yes but fear of loosing a little can deter them & others from such misadventure. if you look at fare wars, and stiff competition, just few cancellations with negative notes from fare paying passengers will do the trick. :)

Airlines loose money in crores...every bit of extra income helps their bottom line...so may be the charges are for that..
