Vinay: You should be familiar with the properties of the 3 major weapon types: 1. rifle, 2. shotgun, and 3. handgun.
A great deal depends on your location and what the "lay of the land" is like. You know a rifle bullet can travel several miles, depending on the cartridge. Even the .22 long rifle bullet is dangerous over a mile. So figure that, if it is dark and you are touching off your weapon at an ill-defined target, you may well be putting holes in the bedroom wall of a sleeping child a kilometer away. This is something you do not want.
So if you are out in the middle of nowhere, a rifle might be a choice, where you can see people skulking about your farm easily.
Also, what is the lighting like in your location? This may be a factor to consider. Another question to answer is, what sort of trouble do you expect? Are you troubled by occasional burglars that are somewhat inept and acting alone, or are you dealing with organized gangs, who may be armed as well?
A shotgun, depending on the load, is better where you have to worry about collateral damage close by.
Something else to consider is, how familiar you are with shooting various types of weapons, your level of proficiency, and the opportunity you have to practice.
It may be that a dog or two may answer many of your problems. Or, a dog or dogs may be used in conjunction with a weapon.
There are just too many variables to your situation which are not defined, for us to make a recommendation at this point.

Vinay: Whatever you can get your hands on when you need it. Unless you are planning on long range engagements, a shotgun would probably be a better choice. More likely to hit with in poor light, and less likely to kill. Though the latter can count against it, if the bad guy decides to come back for revenge. But as hamilcar01 has pointed out, this topic has been discussed to no end. And the choices usually come down to just that, personal choice based on opinion.

12g shotgun will be my first choice, not expensive, easy to get, reliable, accurate, a lot of stopping power, give you some range too, which for example .32 revolver will not. second, get your self very good gun cabinet and be 100% sure it kept safe.

mr.vinay,
it depends on your mental ability to handle a situation.many a times you must have read about people shot though they had a gun ,also some physically weak have been able to overcome their situation.gun plus right decision would always help.

I'd say the ultimate defensive or for that matter, an offensive tool, is the human brain. How we think matters the most. Thinking strategically and then tactically is the key to defense.

Very true. But without the tools to implement, it won't get you out of a sticky situation.

I think main point is not to get into sticky situation. last thing I would dream about is to get into open shooting some one. use your brain ... good audio system, for example can be a better then 10 guns. there is a classical military examples how Chinies armies been stopped, by Russians who just were moving track mounted powerful audio unit, along the front line and playing sounds of tanks on the move. best defense is an offense as some one said.

i remember a story of a SAS operative who operated for the longest time ever in the eire.
he had some geese with him.
they apparently are the best at home defense with a bad bite and rottweiler instincts when it comes to protecting their turf!!!

Plus 1 Safarigent advise and others on geese cackle and dogs..A famous Burglar in US actually feared the small active dogs who bark and create nuisance more than the big nasty ones..
I personally have seen pack of mongrels on farm are best deterrent than the fancy expensive dogs add geese now you have a great fail safe system..other options having a back up systems with neighbors and be on good terms with them
which can be sticky and tricky sometimes..
On guns I would prefer shotty and some other back up options of powerful noisy alarm and light with back up power ( motion detectors etc) and yes decent walls .
Good luck
