The largest army in the world?

There's something to be said for having a viable second line of defense; people who can shoot and (for the most part) hit what they shoot.
600,000 in Wisconsin alone.... and there are 50 states.
The state of Wisconsin has gone an entire deer hunting season without someone getting killed. That’s great. There were over 600,000 hunters.

Allow me to restate that number. Over the last two months, the eighth largest army in the world – more men under arms than Iran; more than France and Germany combined – deployed to the woods of a single American state to help keep the deer menace at bay.

During WW2, the Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto said: "You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass."
I wish it were so in India too.

I love the Japanese General's quote. Hopefully with the efforts of NAGRI, the same could be said about India in the future too.

in Russia 2 years military service is mandatory for all man. Everybody get trained, not just how to shoot, but exact military specialty. Russia can assemble huge army in a week time. Just to know how to shot is not enough, you need to know how to use radio, how to use radars, missiles, mines, RPGs, tanks, canons, how to repair all that staff, plus medical, plus administrative etc. if you will bring up together 600k of hunters, who are perfect shooters, that is not an army at all.

History has shown us time and again what a determined body of men can do. We don't have to look very far back either. The Viet Cong and the NVA, with very little of an organized army's structure and material, successfully resisted the then most powerful army in the world for years and won. Look at the Afghans, they resisted the British successfully (three times), they resisted the Russians and are now resisting the USA. Just a bunch of rag tag guys with rifles and not much else. They were/are not an organized army either. They did not know "to use radars, missiles, mines, RPGs, tanks, canons, how to repair all that staff, plus medical, plus administrative", at least not at first. Even then they dispensed with most of the rest and and still prevailed over the Russians who had all that.
After Ww2 Chang Kai Shek had all that and he still got defeated by a bunch of communist peasants who had not much more than their ideology (however flawed it was) and their rifles. In Zimbabwe, again a rag-tag group of men overthrew an organized government who had a modern army, even though it didn't turn out very well for the people of Zimbabwe. The list goes on and on.
You just cannot dismiss determined armed men that easily.

however this slogan is wrongly attributed to general yamamoto.
Shooter, thanks for bringing that to my notice. It just goes to show that one must check ones sources always.

Why go as far away as Afghanistan, current so called super power-The USA has the President for life Fidel Castro sitting right in their backyard for last 50 years.
US Presidents have come and Presidents have gone, the world order has changed and Fidel is still ruling in Cuba. Viva la revolution!
And all this achieved with a motley bunch of men armed with guns most armies would shun against the worlds most modern army/navy/air force.
Surprisingly, with the 2nd amendment allowing citizens to bear arms and US was still not able to save itself from 09/11. Makes you think for a moment if its relevant in today's day and age because all the rhetoric aside American economy is nowhere near back from the recession, Osama is still around.
Do you believe that these 600,000 can make any difference?

I would like to correct you,in Russia mandatory service is for one year, not two.Don't believe all you read in the media, most of the soldiers/conscripts are busy making "dachas" for generals! Most of the dross in the Russian army don't know how to use radios, most don't even see an RPG,let alone fire one.The only "soldiers"in their army are the ones who serve under contract.

Yes we do agree to the point where most wars are fought with missiles smart bombs and carpet bombing runs... but even after all this the Infantry ground troops have to hold and secure the ground. This is where armed militia and armed citizens come in. The bigger point and more relevant reason to have lawfully owned arms by law abiding citizens is self defense from criminals and terrorists. A lot of terrorists will think twice before attacking or taking hostages at a traditionally armed establishment / society.

This is absolutely true, even in india it holds true.
3 days i read an article in Hindustan times, where there was write up about an ex dacoit, who is now fighting the naxals.
He is armed with LICENSED .12 bore and 30-06, has group of 15-20 people and they have being far more effective against naxals, they are fighting on the naxal grounds and killing them too, where the police doesnt even dare enter.
I tried getting the link to the article but couldnt get it, any one having access to hindustan time epaper should be able to get it.

Rohan, were did you learn it. there is no soldiers on contract in russian army, only officers and "praporshiks", at least was not there 10 year ago. In some colleges in Russia, like medical for example, they do have army faculty and those who recruited from such colleges usually doing service as officers and then it is 1 year. For all others it is two years. In every city they have army commendante who keeps all records of reserve and recruiting fresh guys every year. After been recruited they sent to special school where they will learn their military specialty usually 3-4 months.

your information is far from been correct. Russia has biggest number of well trained military mans in the world. They do have all equipment and all tanks, rockets and RPGs and other staff stored in huge warehouses, across the country. so it will be well equipped army also which can easy outnumber US 200K.

and no offense, but it is not you who shell correct me, as I have been on service in russian army myself.

that is very good points. I got recently one book called Sling and the Stone, highly recommending it, just was like eye opener for me.

non of them been defeated that is historical fact. Mao lost all his mens from 85K only 5K remained, Sandinistas was completely destroyed and despite of that they got into power and formed governments. They always loose military battle, but ultimately won political.

Pardon me for being so thick headed but would like to know how would a traditionally armed society would help us combat terrorism and criminals? Easy gun access opens a flood gate wherein everyone has access to guns/ammunition unregulated. In our country with so many people without basic amenities like food/clothing and water will not unregulated gun law lead to anarchy?
My father used to tell me about driving any vehicle "Driving is a privilege not a birth right" In our country where we can't regulate underage/drunk driving (leading to horrendous incidents) how can we assume that throwing open the door to anyone who wants to keep a gun will make our country a better place.

Don't you feel that a middle way needs to be found?

with guns or with knives machetes people will do something to protect themselves. Once all this industrial bubble will collapse large number of people will be on loose, no food, no money, no way to go. So better prepare your self. Here in Hyderabad we already having prototypes of future, gated communities, right now it is quite weak gated I would say.
