A 49-year-old head constable died inside Connaught Place police station when another policeman's service pistol, which he was cleaning, went off accidentally. The incident took place around 11:15am. The victim has been identified as T P Illyas, of Kerala, who had been living with his family in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar.
He was posted with the New Delhi district armoury team and was responsible for the training of new recruits posted at police stations and the maintenance of arms, said a senior police officer. "There was a training session for five-six policemen at the Connaught Place police station. Illyas and the other personnel were in the courtyard near the police station's `maalkhana' (storeroom)," the officer added. A new recruit, Constable Mohit, who was part of Illyas's team, was standing with him.
Another constable passing by was stopped by Illyas after he noticed rusting on his 9MM pistol. He asked the constable to hand over his pistol. The constable handed over the pistol to Illyas without taking out the magazine. Illyas then gave Mohit the pistol to clean. Mohit also did not remove the magazine while cleaning the pistol at this time Illyas and Mohit were sitting in the basement and accidentally pulled the trigger," said a senior police officer.
The bullet passed through the right side of Illyas's chest. His heart and liver were damaged by the bullet," the officer added. Illyas was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. A constable who had been standing near Illyas also suffered minor injuries.
Police said they have registered a case of death due to negligence and that the constable who accidentally pulled the trigger will be suspended and later arrested. The body has been sent to hospital for a postmortem. Illyas had been in the armoury team for the past 14 years and was living alone with his wife and two daughters in Delhi for the past 29 years, said police.

Now, Jeff Cooper would be somersaulting in his grave. Always, please follow these 4 rules:
Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. (For those who insist that this particular gun is unloaded, see Rule 1.)
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target. This is the Golden Rule. Its violation is directly responsible for about 60 percent of inadvertent discharges.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you have not positively identified.
