The Bofors gun has proved it's worthiness in Kargil war... And it continues to give India "an edge" over the adversary on the Line of Control (LoC). How come it is quite outdated?

Re: Demo Of Bofors Gun!!
Setting aside the infamous "Bofors scam" .
This undoubtedly IS the best field gun with the Indian Army.
With no ear protection, I wonder if those gunners go deaf by the time they retire.

Re: Demo Of Bofors Gun!!
Compared to what we should be using, the generals have said it is outdated and we need a replacement howitzer.Efforts are on to produce a better medium howitzer.
There was talk of buying from the Americans or another bofors variant.
http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/rahu ... 37759.html
Also what the Indian army needs now.

Looks like arty school deolali But why the heck are the troops behaving like Kangroos...Wasting energy just focus on mechanics. Bofor is a great gun its not outdated India just doesnt have enough in numbers. Its a poison pill thanks to that old saga so now they are evaluating Denel, GIAT etc and DRDO is reverse engineering Bofors too which IMHO is fine/ Just like the big dragon

Gentle men dats just a demo during ex topchi, a fire power demonstration for civilians and defence pers alike, the drills you see that's only during such shows ,actual firing dats an entirely different ball game, this gun can fire 60rds in 10 minutes den a rest of 10 mins n again 60 rds skyman it may be outdated but still can compete with msot of the latest gun systems available, and it has proven its worth time n again i have the honour of doin GPO,OP offr & BC of this very weapon over a span of 6 yrs n it has never failed me or my brother officers to my knowledge...i wish i could show you gentlemen its functions..but sorry i left for a different unit

You still havent answered skyman. Instead of posting links, answer the question put to you.
How do YOU think the bofors is outdated? Which features do you think the modern indian corps of artillery requires?
And instead if asking questions again from a simple 'english teacher' try googling for info:

Re: Demo Of Bofors Gun!!
The bofors is a one heck of a howitzer, proved itself during the kargil war. Its not a outdated gun but the army is trying to supplement it with various other guns of the same caliber 155mm which helps in the logistics and army wants a common caliber . The army is issuing a tender of various class of 155mm howitzer to be used in different indian terrains (obvious you cannot carry an self propelled howitzer to a hilly terrain with difficulties and deployment is time consuming) , therefore the m777 (heli mobile) and truck mounted arty such as Caesar, archer or rheinmetall rwg-52 for hilly terrain ,they are light and can be deployed easily.
Secondly towed howiter such as bofors are heavy and need to be towed and army basically wants to keep this gun for the punjab and rajasthan sector.
Thirdly a self propelled howitzer such as st kinetics K9 thunder or pzh 2000 for mobility+firepower(fire and scoot) for the sectors mentioned above.

Re: Demo Of Bofors Gun!!
As mentioned above, modern artillery has evolved to being self propelled and capable of firing intelligent projectiles. We need to go there.
Having a towed howitzer is alright if you are going to settle down and fire all day.But to be able to have a true strategic advantage, they have to go, fire and come back.In the Archer for instance, you have to go and park. The gun will do the rest.

Re: Demo Of Bofors Gun!!
India already posesess guided artillery shells of 155mm krasnopol (russian) for its bofors and India is also about to buy huge quantities of XM985 excalibur(laser guided arty shells) for its ultra light howitzer and also to be used by the existing bofors.Skyman wrote:As mentioned above, modern artillery has evolved to being self propelled and capable of firing intelligent projectiles. We need to go there.

Skymam ,it seems you are doing a promotional stunt for Archer, did they hire you
And sorry to spoil your day because India will never purchase archer and its out of race fot the tender.
