Promising shooter dies in air crash near Cameroon

Post by mishradk » Tue May 08, 2007 1:56 pm

Promising young pistol shooter Amol Chauhan was one among the 15 Indians onboard the fateful Kenya-bound flight, that crashed with 114 people in a dense forest in Cameroon on Saturday.

Amol was son of Sharad Chauhan, Managing Director of Parle Products, and was a regular part of the National Championships.

Amol had won two team silver medals in the National Games in Guwahati early this year, which was his last competitive tournament.

National Rifle Association of India General Secretary Baljit Singh Sethi has condoled Amol's death. "May God rest the departed soul in peace," he said in his message.

Its tragic news, I know the family well, very humble people.

Amol was a natural, great fun to be around & with no airs. I recollect once after a month long holiday without any training he took part in the national games, hyderabad & scored 570/600 in centerfire.

Amols father is a arjuna awardee, his mother won several gold medals at the national pistol shooting championships.

I was hoping he would be one of the lucky one's to survive but I guess that wasn't to be. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

As Sat says he was a down to earth chap. During one of the National's in Bangalore (2001 or 2002 - forget which), he wanted to have a haircut. I thought he wanted me to take him to a swanky 5 Star hotel but he was perfectly content to be dropped off at a roadside barber.

RIP Amol.
