Gun Show and Trap Shooting with the guys... what a day!!

Post by conty1 » Mon Nov 06, 2006 4:59 pm

Went to the Wheaton Gun Show early morning in hopes of scoring a cheap hand gun, but unfortunately didnt get any good deals. Inder tho bought a couple of nice knives.

Then went for some Cajun lunch. Thanks for lunch again Mehul! (Oh and your glasses etc is in my car trunk)

And then the big event... trap shooting.

I'll let the pictures and the other guys tell the rest of the story :)

Conty,

Thanks for the pics. I would have expected it to be nippier than the clothes suggest.

You're right Mack The Knife... It has been around 30-40F for the past month or so... luckily it was around 55F yesterday.

But I think Inder was 'colder' then the others ... wanna tell the group what happened Inder? :):)

Yah, Yah I will tell, Again I sucked, Managed to got only 4 hits from 25 shells and that too...., then what you expect from a guy who shot more shells yesterday than in 29 years :D but then i am still learning :mrgreen::mrgreen:

But really what a Day, we went to Wheaton gun show which was according to Mehul was not so big gun show but I am sure there were more guns there than total number of guns in Haryana and Punjab :D and you should see to believe it these guys were selling everything from Russian Sniper rifles to AK's, M16's. Really this place is Mecca for gun nuts. I managed to buy some Smith and Wesson knives.

Will post pics of the knives soon. I hope i do better this Thursday

Friends,

Thanks to Amit for posting the pictures and to both Amit and Inder for a fantastic day. Yes, we had a great time and Inder got to see what a gun show is like - this one was at a small rural community. Next week there is a much bigger one in Rockford and we shall go there as well.

Amit's shooting was superb yesterday and I didn't do very well. My first experience with steel shot but I am not offering any excuse here. Just have to get out and shoot more. We had to ask the club if they would let Inder shoot as he is not a US resident and it took them the best of five minutes to check and let us know that he could if he had a foreign ID of some kind. He had his passport so it was $ 10 for a 25 round game and off we went. Amit's friend and one of the club's best shooters Steve coached Inder in gun safety with pump and semi autos - Steve shoots a Remington 1100 with a fixed Improved Modified barrel like Inder and we watched Inder get some shooting. I don;t think he has anything to be ashamed of at all - we all start shooting at some point and with a little effort can always improve. I can see how much more enthusiastic Inder is now - we hope to shoot regularly every Thursday evening and SUnday afternoon when the Naperville Sportsmen's Club meets. For your information, the range is at a public park that is provided to shooters by the city of Naperville, a beautiful little city that is about 30 miles from Chicago. The club subsidises shotshells to everyone who buys them from there and Naperville residents get a further discount than non residents. Some people who bought steel shot from a commercial store were extremely unhappy when the realised how much cheaper they were at the club than at the store where they bought them.

The club has a huge number of pistols for sale at very reasonable prices and Amit is thinking of buying one in the near future. He hasn't decided what to buy but there is everything from antique Mauser HScs to NIB SIG 226s and 1911s. It is going to be more and more fun in the weeks ahead! 8)

Now, this last bit is for those who are hesitating to visit here for some reason. These posts are specifically to entice you guys to overcome your shyness and make it here. I'll let Inder tell you how friendly and cordial the atmosphere is at the club to make you guys visit earlier than you had planned to.

Amit,

Thanks buddy. Sorry for leaving the glasses and hearing stuff in yyour car. Not that I need it in a hurry - just was wondering if I need to buy new stuff or not.

Cheers,

Mehul

No Mehul, thanks but I dont think I was shooting like I should. At the Aurora club, I usually got 20+. Will surely have to practice more on the steel shells.

Lets plan for Thursday!!

Hey, I'm sure you guys know that Steel and Lead shot pattern differently in the same choke.

This guy doesnt.

Does steel shot open up more for a given choke and distance?

Mack The Knife,

Because steel shot is harder and lighter than lead, you have to use a size smaller as far as choke is concerned. You also need to use a barrel that is strong enough though the club's resident gunsmith told me that steel shot of Size 7 and smaller could be used in virtually any barrel made for lead. Not wanting to take any risk, I bought a $ 80 barrel for my A 5 that takes steel shot and that was the one that Inder and I shot on that day.

Grumpy is the expert here - he would give a more detailed explanation.

Cheers,

Mehul

You're welcome anytime Inder. And so is anybody else from this group.

Inder and Mehul, we still on for tomorrow night right? I'm thinking Grilled Pork Chops and Tandoori Cornish Hen. (More enticement for others;)) And of course Mehul's famous cocktails. I know its a little belated, but this will be our little IFG Birthday Bash!!
