Trip to Mexico - Need some Advice

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are starting to plan a trip to Mexico next spring. We'd love to spend a week exploring some of the more popular destinations along the Yucatan peninsula. So far we're thinking about splitting our time between Tulum, Playa del Carmen and maybe Isla Mujeres.

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to fit all those places into a 1 week trip? We're open to renting a car or relying on buses/ferries if that makes the most sense logistically. We'd also love any recommendations for where to stay - we want nicely appointed rooms but don't need super luxury.

We'd also appreciate insights into what are can't-miss things to see and do in each of those locations. We're pretty active and enjoy beaches, snorkeling, hiking, Mayan ruins and good food/drink. Any "hidden gem" type spots that might not show up on all the guidebooks?
