Cops to seize guns till Games

New Delhi: The ministry of home affairs (MHA) has issued a directive saying all licensed firearms are to be deposited with the police till the end of the Commonwealth Games in October. While the directive has been implemented in Gurgaon and Faridabad, Delhi Police is still to act on it. The decision, sources say, has been taken to help maintain law and order and to prevent the misuse of arms during the Games.

Delhi Police officers however are in a fix over the circular. ‘‘There are nearly 30,000 licensed firearms in Delhi. Where will all these weapons be stored? And then we will have to depute extra people to guard the weapons when we’re already stretched thin arranging for the Games,” said a senior police officer.

Another Delhi Police officer described the MHA directive as being a futile exercise, saying, ‘‘A minimal percentage of licensed weapons are involved in crime. If MHA wants to clamp down on crime, it needs to improve law and order and crack down on criminals. The mere depositing of firearms will not help them save dignitaries and foreigners visiting the Games. Most of the firearms used for crime in the city are illegal.”

The firearms will be kept at the police stations till the end of the Games in October 2010. ‘‘We received a letter from the Central government to get all licensed arms deposited at local police stations between March 1 and March 31 and to hold them there till the Commonwealth Games are over,” said a senior Gurgaon police official.

Delhi Police added that there is no ban on the issuing of fresh license. Gurgaon and Faridabad Police though said they have stopped issuing fresh licenses.

Before the authorities disarm bonafide citizens owning arms, the citizens should demand that the authorities give a guarantee that they have disarmed all illegal arms holders. If not, they should get together and refuse to comply to such idiotic rules. Gun owners should insist that before the authorities disarm law abiding citizens they have to be able to make sure that not even a single goonda is able to arm himself with even a catapult. Btw what happens to guns owned by shooters who are taking part in the commonwealth games??

Excellent point, Jonah!

This sort of business can be a scary thing. When I was a youngster decades ago, long before there was any scare about gun registration, my Dad told me how he went through Europe with the US Army. An officer would go to the burgermeister of a town and ask for all of guns owned by all the citizens. The burgermeister would get all of the guns registered rounded up. They would be laid on a street and a tank was driven over them all.

I shudder to think of all of the nice guns, like dreilings and the rest, that were destroyed in this manner.

Anyway, your point is excellent -- that if your legal guns are going to be confiscated, the government should be able to provide an iron-clad guarantee that illegal firearms would not be present.

:agree:

However Jonah, many laws and emergency actions have been only taken in "desperation". The story has been -- the arms possessed illegally have more involvement in the illegal activities/mis-uses rather than the ones possessed legally.

More than the firearms, they should plan to tackle the arms that own/use the "firearms".

Careful....don't speak against the MHA... you'll end up in a pile of dung. Even union ministers get a terrific arsekicking if they do so.... :)

there is something legal gun owners can do..
Seek police protection for the time period for which they are disarmed!
Now 30,000 firearms replaced by Khakhi wearers is not going to be easy on the Police, a mere attempt on this by 10% of the Delhi gun owners will screw them right in.

by the way, you can't keep the new mode of protection in a holster under your arm pit, or the crevice behind.. but will for sure be effective. :D :D :D :D
