Never heard of hoplophobia? Most people haven't. The made-up word to describe people who fear guns hasn't caught on. Not even longtime gun enthusiasts are familiar with the term.

"We lead the state in sales, but we've never heard that," said Norman Van Wagenen, whose family has been in the firearms business in Provo since 1958.

The Utah Shooting Sports Council is trying to get hoplophobia into the local vernacular as well as the often bitter gun rights debate.

"There is such a thing as hoplophobia," said David Nelson, founder of Stonewall Shooting Sports of Utah. "It is driving many of the people engaged in the (gun rights) debate."

Sorry, folks; it's quite an old news but a good piece to read.

It is surely a good read.

In my opinion, I guess there is some sort of phobia related to just about anything in the world. One might even come up with a 'copophobia', meaning afraid to go to the police station; and meet cops :)

But a proper phobia term should more or less be related to more worldy concepts and elements like water, height, etc; one should leave out physical human creations like guns or pens!

Hoplophobia is a term used for the fear of the recoil of a fire arm, not necessarily the fire arm itself as far as I know. This terminology is used quite often by legends like Elmer Keith,Bill jordan etc.
