Gun licences should be issued only on the basis of police's verification of threat: Min of Defence to state govt.

Gun licence only to persons facing grave threats to life: Min of Defence to state govt.
What percentage of gun license applicants state "threat to life" as a reason for applying ?
Armed attacks are a threat everywhere and to every one. The Mumbai attack should have taught us a lot about weapons and right to hold and carry weapons. We have failed to take notice of that, inspite of loss of so many innocent lives. Even the Police are not being armed to protect innocent lives ! We are all "sitting ducks" to armed attacks.
Is it enough to have metal detectors at Star hotels, Malls, temples etc., and in the event armed intruders enter such premises, what can the security guards do. They will probably be the first ones to run and escape, provided they have the knowledge to recognise real weapons. Say, someone enters a mall with a bag of varied firearms and claim they taking the stock to the toy shop, I doubt if the security guards will have the slightest doubt.

where it reads
" Terming the use of arms by private guards a matter of “grave concern”, the Supreme Court on Wednesday took suo motu cognisance of the alleged involvement of private security guards in the gunfight that led to the killing of liquor baron Gurdeep Singh Chadha alias Ponty and his brother Hardeep at their Chhattarpur farmhouse on Saturday. ...."
Why is it not noticed that the return fire stopped the perpetrator. Would it have been "nicer" to have appealed to the perpetrator to stop firing and start talking or chase the perpetrator with empty hands.
Many of us have seen private security guards armed with a DBBL Shotgun at Banks and jewellery shops. In the event of a robbery, it would be like a comedy flick to watch what they would do with the weopon they are holding.
I have seen a guard at a jeweller carefully holding a air rifle with a very solemn look. I doubt if he was aware of the "weapon" he was holding on to so dearly.
A fear tirade is built up against issuing gun licenses whenever a someone shoots himself or someone else. Why is everyone so afraid of guns and why so much bias ? Even a pencil is dangerous. The loss of life is deeply regrettable, but there is no talk of education or training to even licensed gun users. They assume that a a ban on guns will solve the problem. Automobiles cause thousands of casualties. There is no ban on driving licenses, on the contrary, awareness on safe use is projected.
Owning a gun gives raw power, but at the same time it also gives a feeling of security and most of all responsibility and any gun owner will tell, that owning weopons has taught them, if not anything humility.
We need mass awareness and education on the security aspects of owning guns.
When innocents are prone to be attacked with automatics, should not the innocents be given the right to have a .22 pistol to defend themselves ?
Will the media help to create this awareness ? Are there not among IFGians who are in the media who will take up to creating an awareness and need for responsible armed citizens ?
