Gurgaon Toll Shooting

I received many calls from well meaning friends when the news of the Gurgaon Toll Shooting broke out :
>> This is why guns have a bad name
>> How do we explain this
>> Where is the constitutional right when such things happen
>> How can you justify gun ownership when people do these things with guns
Yet, it is for exactly these kind of situations that we advocate supporting our constitutional right for gun ownership.
The criminal concerned clearly showed a remorseless approach to the use of his firearm.
This same fellow will not think twice if he decides that he wants your car on that same highway or if he wants to rape a woman.
Or if he feels someone is not letting him pass on the road
Or . . . .
It is these predators of our society that the majority need protection against.
They just shoot and scoot. It is an entirely different scenario when they are accosted by lawfully armed citizens.
There are many arguments, but the fact remains that this criminal behaved the way he did was because he had access to the use of deadly force knowing that there was no likelihood of opposition to him

I fully agree with your views. We need this right solely to tackle these kinds of senseless people. What scares me more is the fact that the guy waited for the attendant to reopen the booth window. this is insane and it falls squarely on us to keep the society safe for this kind of incident.

Sad..
There are some reports in paper that it was a 7.65 round which if I am not wrong is .32. I wonder what conclusions anti's going to draw if that’s a licensed pistol. Obviously they are not going to look at other side of it

Would it have been better had he bashed the poor fellows skull in with a rock or a hammer,or maybe stabbed him with a screwdriver,or maybe strangled him with his hands? As the number of metrosexuals increases, this sort of shock and horror shall also become common place.

I am glad to see this article Katanaji i.e. reporting on actual problem rather than going bonkers with anti gun tripe. There is so much lawlessness on these toll booths, people getting into wrong lanes, Arguments about change, attendants charging money but not giving recipts but there is no body to maintain law and order there. I hope this time people in power look into problem of ”not adequate policing” than going after gun owners.

I have often noticed at Mulund Toll on EEH (Mumbai-Thane) that drivers of cars and "Sumos" (incl Bolero, Scorpio, Trax, Innova etc. etc.) sporting number plates and stickers with a clock showing time as 10-10 or a palm encased in India's tricolor - often get into arguments with the toll collectors and flash some ID or certificate and claim "VIP/ VVIP privilege" that exempts from paying the toll. Often such a drama goes on for 10-15 minutes and finally after a series of (cell) phone calls with "lo-idhar baat kar lo..." following the heated arguments, the vehicles are let go - without paying the toll. Wonder if the concerned vehicle at Gurgaon sported any similar stickers or carried similar passengers. That might explain the "disappearance" of police who was supposed to be there in the first place.
The crux of the problem is "definition and identification" of VIP/ VVIP - may be the BOT companies of surface infrastructure can take a leaf out of AAI and start NAMING the VIP/ VVIP publicly - as any one who has traveled by air can vouch there's only *ONE* VVIP mentioned by *name* who is exempt from checks - others being the *positions* e.g. President of India, Prime Minister of India etc. etc.

Had there been a few licensed weapon holders, and the clarity of law. Things could have been different.

The man dealt with so much populace of all kinds (good & bad) and so much of money daily. He was in dire need of protection. As much as a bank employee needs against the threats of life during robbing attempts.

50% of head injuries result from Road traffic accidents
50% are related to alcohol use (either drunk driving or violence)
20 % due to violence (firearm injuries just one of them, not all; and legal firearms even less)
3% due to sports.
Note:data true for europe, im not sure if a study has been done in India.
Out of the above, alcohol, driving and sports are legal.
clock showing time as 10-10
Sorry been away for too long. What does this symbol mean?
as any one who has traveled by air can vouch there's only *ONE* VVIP mentioned by *name* who is exempt from checks
Who is that person? Again i dont know as i think ive been away for too long. Ive travelled by air but cant think of that person.
"VIP/ VVIP privilege" that exempts from paying the toll.
Why should these people not pay toll? as you correctly mentioned, these people fly. but they still pay for the flights. (even if they are misisters, the govt. pays for their tickets; the tickets themselves arent free.). So why shouldnt they have to pay for toll? Or does the govt. pay for them?

Thank god for it being an illegally acquired firearm(as today's TOI reports)or else the anti's would be having a field day.
We need to tell the Anti's that this happens because criminals don't expect the innocent people whom they target and prey upon to be armed. If there was a strong and responsible gun culture in the country or enough armed guards around the toll the situation would have been different . This Psychopath would have thought twice before pulling out his illegal pistol had he expected the toll collector to be armed . The government and our home minister in his wisdom only help these people . They give them the confidence to prey upon innocent people by denying the law abiding the tools required for self defense. Its is because we are law abiding that we seek and apply for an arms license. They fail to see this. Had we been criminals or criminally inclined we would have gone ahead and bought an illegal weapon as well rather than waiting for the whims and fancy of a government servant to issue us a license. The governments inability to differentiate between the good and the bad is an alarming situation. When is the government going to give up its attitude of the dictatorial ruler and start behaving like a democratic one and start serving the people rather than rule them.
