Indians For Guns

Now that the Libyan revolution is coming closer to its conclusion, the people in charge have decided to disarm the fighters who fought, bled and died to achieve their liberty from a Tyrant. The new "leaders" promise democracy but first they require the Libyan people to give up the tools that made that liberty possible. It looks like not much will change in Libya in the future, except for the names of the people in charge.

My heart beats a little faster for the Libyan rebels, who seem close to winning freedom from decades of ruthless dictatorship. Before we begin congratulating them, though, NPR reveals that the new government may be taking steps to eliminate any possibility of the kind of resistance that brought them to power in the first place . . .

The chief spokesman for the rebel transitional council goes on to ask what use anyone would have with automatic weapons. Apparently, private gun ownership is not, historically, a traditional Libyan cultural value.
And so The New Boss will offer cash incentives to convince “rebels” to turn in their arms voluntarily. Ultimately, unsurprisingly, the anti-Gaddafi forces will use ”the full force of the law” to forcibly disarm Libyans who resist.
The new Libya are sending the clear message that the right of self preservation belongs to the people in power. Again. Still. It’s a tragedy in the making; the chances that the new Libyan leaders will benevolently dispense law and order to an unarmed populace are almost as great as they were under Gaddafi. Very, very low.

Sad.

The fact that they started collecting guns so early does seem to indicate that they were clear about this policy from an earlier time. I seem to be one of the few people over here who has not been cheering on "democracy" as if it was a football club. I would rather see what works out first. We old timers still remember The Who singing "Won't Get Fooled Again": Meet the new boss, same as the old boss... Let us hope that it actually works out differently.

Wasn't I saying Libya may become independent but nothing will change, people would soon realize their brothers, sisters, fathers, friends fought for the wrong people and BAM! another revolution.
