followup on ourHyderabad police commissioner reaction on the incident"

Quote DECCAN CHRONICLE,

City police commissioner A.K. Khan on Saturday advised Hyderabadis to keep trained dogs to fight dacoits and burglars.
Reacting to the incident of a doctor opening fire at two intruders at Bharani Layout in Jubilee Hills late on Friday night, Mr Khan said citizens should not only be concerned about the beauty and aesthetics of their houses, but also take care to ensure basic security measures are taken.

“Residents spend crores of rupees on construction of houses in Banjara

Hills and Jubilee Hills.
Many of these houses are unsafe from the security point of view as they lack basic security features.

Some of the houses have glass without a grill for protection. They are easy to break into. Even the exhaust vents or AC vents are not properly protected,” the top cop said.

“Even the watchmen in these houses are not positioned at vantage points from which they can keep an eye on the movement of intruders,” Mr Khan said. He added, “It is advisable to have good trained dogs and this gives the residents a great sense of security.”

Trained dogs????? That would require at least a year. Just like they use trained monkeys to chase away other monkeys when they could declare them as varmints and there would be no shortage of volunteers to shoot them down. Speaking of iron grills, I have heard thief unscrews them from the wood frame and gets easily inside. The place where I live the most common way of entering a house used to be digging a tunnel from the backyard and finishing it inside the house, this trick was defeated by a lot of homeowner by chopping the thief's head with a "Naga dao" when it pops up from the tunnel. This effectively lowered the number of burglaries. I say, most effective way to eliminate burglaries isn't high security measure but courage and intelligence of the homeowner, also his determination to eliminate the threat.

Depending entirely on dogs is not advisable. Dogs have their own limitations and cannot match the might of armed intruders. Most of the clever criminals just give the dogs some food laced with poison to kill them. At the most dogs can sometimes act as a kind of "early warning" system.

Yes they simply unscrew them but this can be prevented by welding the screws with grill. Best would be instead of using wooden frames, use metallic frames and weld the grills to them.

This is really enterprising. I had mostly read about such feats being done to escape from prisons.

This is even better :)

Both should be done in combination. Proper security measures do provide a window of opportunity to the house owner so that he can get prepared for the response and is not taken by surprise while sleeping.

Hi,

In sharp contrast...

Mr.Shankar Bidari(Former Police commissioner of Bangalore) had awarded a landlord sometime back for having shot a sandal wood smugler....How different is the interpretation of the same provisions of law b/w 2 cities.
I only hope the presiding judge would bear these points while passing orders...
That apart why do we need weapons if we arent allowed to use them for self-defense.
